switching to synthetic at higher mileage

Hey guys,
how many of you guys switched to synthetic once the car was up there in mileage? say over 70k. i've been using blend all this time and no issues etc, but now my car is at 72.5k and have been contemplating going with full synthetic m1 and plan to do it myself for added benefits and especially with summer coming here in florida, just seems like an extra bit of protection.
The reason I am asking is because a fried with a maxima switched over at ~85k and he had issues with leaks etc, prior to that no problems, so his mechanic mentioned that he should have just stayed put with what he had at that mileage etc. so based on reading, it seems that full synthetic cleans out the engine pretty well and if you have any potentials for a leak(stuck debry i guess) it flushes it out and whamo there is a leak or something to that extent. I plan on keeping the car till its worthless metal, so i figured full synth may prove beneficial for long term ownership, just curios on the mileage and the potential issue etc, so any feedback is appreciated..

You will have no issues switching. Older cars had gaskets and seals made of inferior materials that were prone to leaks after switching. This hasn't been a problem in recent years

That, and 70k miles isn't what I consider high mileage. Once you get closer to 100k is when you would need to have the leak factor in the back of your mind.

^^^ thank you both, as I have read a lot on the matter and still somewhat uncertain but what you are both saying is along my level of reasoning as well. I guess if there are issues, the synth will make them readily apparent and that was my concern, but also the more miles i add up the more increased likelihood of this being a probability. thanks guys.

Just do it! Your engine will thank you by lasting a long long time

^^^ i agree. while under warranty i had all my oil changes at dealer, it seemed i always got a coupon on time, so the price was very reasonable etc, but now i am planning on doing it myself and figured I would still come out cheaper or the same if I bought full synthetic oil etc but coincidentally talking to a buddy and he related his issues with 09 maxima and it just had me wondering , so figured i would ask and see what consensus and or real world issues with our cars if any.

I did at 85K. It's a lot better, I can do my yearly 7K miles and only change once. The engine felt a lot smoother to me immediately after the change.

thanks man, the longer change interval is a big plus as well. did you upgrade to a larger oil filter or just stay with same size? just curious, as that is another of my considerations from what i've read...

wow -just re read that- 7k per year huh, man i do that in 2 months or so, good for you though, keep the miles down.

I ended up getting the same size oil filter, but of course the synthetic long-life version. The way I see it, it will make such a small difference over the lifetime of your car you are better off doing some other preventative maintenance instead.

I've used Mobil 1 extended performance synthetic since the car had 16,000 miles. I drive 120 highway miles daily and do oil changes every 7500 miles. Should I be doing something differently?

EDIT: I have 33,000 miles on it now.

^^ its probably what i should have done with mine from the get go, but I let the dealer perform the oil changes and they always had coupons for the synthetic blend for under $30.00 so i always opted for that route, plus i changed mine at 3500.
