Check engine light

My check engine light just came on and I ran the diagnostic engine check and its said it was the map sensor range/performance. How much do these run for and is it safe to get it any other place than the dealer? How long do I have to replace it before somthing bad happens?

If the code is pointing to the MAP sensor, check for any loose hoses and/or vacuum leaks... or change out the MAP (Manifold absolute Pressure) sensor.

The MAF (Mass Air Flow) sensor is something different.... that can be cleaned and it's located near the air filter housing.

Possible cause:
(1) Harness or connectors (The sensor circuit is open or shorted.)
(2) Manifold absolute pressure (MAP) sensor
(3) Intake air leaks

The code is the SYMPTOM not the cause. If you don't have the skills and tools to troubleshoot, take it to the dealer or a good independent.

To troubleshoot:
Use a OBD-2 scanner and look at the value of PID 0x0B. With the engine off is should be around 100 KPa (assuming close to sea level) and with the engine running at idle about 25 KPa.
