Clutch is going I think

So yesterday I did get the urge to have a spirited drive. I took off and floored it, but when I was going into second I had it in gear and hit the gas and nothing! The car was"in gear" but I didn't get anything. I backed off and coasted for a bit and everything was ok. I got back home and the garage had the smell of burnt clutch. I took the car out this morning for a quick trip to see if it would happen again and thankfully it didn't. I did notice that letting the clutch out in first was a little rough feeling and everything else seemed normal. Gonna keep an eye on it but you guys think that sounds like a slipping clutch? I don't even wanna know how much a damn clutch costs. Only 38K on the damn car too

Could it be covered under warranty?

I figure this falls under powertrain...which could still be valid for a 2010 even without extended warranty...but in your case, the extended (is it bumper to bumper?) should cover this even better.

Last I checked a clutch is a wear and tear item like brakes and unless you have some sort of a defect with yours you'll be paying for a new one. Now with that said 38k seems low for needing a new clutch but it's all in how it's been driven. If you do end up needing a new one, look into the aftermarket like Jim wolf or southbend you can get a nice set up for much cheaper than OEM

That's sad...OP, I'd still let the dealership tell you "no" before buying a new one.

I dont drive it hard. I only sort of get on it when I am getting on the freeway. I have no idea how the previous owner drove it though...could have been his/her first manual car IDK. But I am gonna keep an eye on it and see how it act for the next couple weeks. I gotta find the paperwork but I hope its covered since it such low mileage and not abused

The common way to check it is put the car in 6th around 30mph and give it gas. If the RPM's go up and the MPH doesn't you will need a new clutch.

Sounds like the clutch is giving up the ghost. Premature clutch wear is covered under warranty. You should be OK.

Some have had luck with paying for aftermarket parts and having the dealership perform the labor under warranty. I wouldn't count on this though. And if you do, you are on your own as far as any further warranty.

Mine went out at 60K and I just paid out of pocket to have it replaced with more sturdy aftermarket parts.

BB, how do you sell that to a dealer? It's like having tires or pads wear out way too soon. They claim it's the driving style or stop/go driving.

I am eager to see what kind of mileage I get on my own clutch. It is driven very adult like. The last car was traded in with well over 80K on the original clutch with no slippage issues. Granted everything else leaked on it though (4th gen z28 6spd w/ lt1 engine).

FWIW I traded in my 06 G35 6sp at 171796 miles with the original clutch.
I had an 88 Mazda 929 5 speed manual that needed a clutch at 190k miles
I had 1 1980 Diesel Rabbit with 246k miles with the original clutch.
The wife sold her 93 Mazda Protege with 150k miles still on the original clutch

The clutch wear is strongly dependent on driving style

This means didley squat. I also had another car with over 220K on the original clutch. I got 60K out of this one. Different cars. Different parts.

Whether you choose to acknowledge it or not, there have been a number of owners of THIS car who have had premature wear issues. A quick Google search will yield a number of complaints regarding premature clutch wear and failed CSC issues and replacement by Infiniti, some at as low as 17K miles. Infiniti has a TSB for clutch pedal issues that has the techs bleeding the fluid and using a different clutch fluid (the spec fluid for the GTR). If this is correcting the issues, then it is an equipment/manufacturer issue and not any negligence on the part of the owners. If that's the correct fluid to make the parts work correctly, it should have been the factory fill and it should state to use only that fluid in the owner's manual. But it doesn't and it won't. Because that would be admitting a flaw and Infiniti would have to assume liability for all of the repairs. It's much easier and cheaper to blame the drivers and handle the repairs on a case by case basis and only take care of the owners who will not slink off quietly when they're told that the parts they paid for not being fit for the indented use is the user's fault and not Infiniti's fault.

Not everyone will have the issue. Some people do drive in a way that's much easier on the clutch. That doesn't mean that other drivers "don't know how to drive a stick" or that they're doing anything wrong or abusing the parts. If I drive 15 miles a day on the highway in one gear, of course I'll have a lot less wear on my clutch than someone who commutes 60 miles a day with a lot of stop and go traffic and gear changes. That's what they bought their car for and it's supposed to be suitable for that purpose.

Jsolo, the way I went about getting Infiniti to replace the clutch, CSC, and MC on my wife's G (while it was still under warranty) is I simply went in with facts (my own car's premature CSC failure at 60K) and didn't accept no for an answer. I told them that I needed them to replace the clutch, flywheel, CSC, and MC. I told them they could do it all at once now and be done with it, or I'd keep bringing it back each time one of the components failed and that I wouldn't simply go away if they said no. I'd tell my friends if they took care of it like they should. I'd tell the world if they decided not to. They said OK.

^^You drove a hard bargain. The way I use this car, the warranty will be up before any significant mileage accumulates. I'll keep your comments in mind if this issue does come up. I suppose it is cheaper to produce friction disks with less material, then blame the customer for premature wear.

I'm at 65k right now and the factory warranty for powertrain parts ends at 70k. I have the Mfg extended warranty which brings me to 90k I believe. I feel a slight grind when downshifting into 5th. I'm almost hoping this worsens in the next 4k miles.

I've had the 5th gear grind on my G35 coupe now and then, now I have it grind on my G37 coupe. Sometimes it's there and sometimes it's not but I don't think it has anything to do with the clutch slipping. I think they put synchros on lower gears but not on 5th gear as it's not used very much. Also I could go for a year without it and one day it comes back, it's weird.
