Transmission Issues - Need Help

Okay guys,
My 2011 g37s transmission went out this past Monday. I have the car for 3 months only & I can't believe my tranny went out. It's covered by the warranty & thanked god I extended the warranty for it. But I'm not covered for the clutch or neither the flywheel. I bought this car in cerritos infiniti auto square & it was certified inspection approved. What should I do in this situation? I was thinking go to the dealership & complain about this for having the car for 3 months, and I'm already having a problem to it. If I had the car for a 1 year, I dont mind paying the clutch or flywheel. I need advice on this & what clutch should I get on this car in case if the dealership wont give me any covered on the clutch or flywheel. I would really appreciate all the tips & advice guys.

I have a hunch the original owner of your vehicle was young, beat the crap out of the vehicle, and did not know how to properly drive a stick shift.

On my previous 06 G35 I traded it in at 171796 miles with the original clutch and never had a transmission problem. With no abuse both should last 200k miles.
I don't trust anyone but the dealer to touch my car.
Since you have a warranty my $.02 is to have the dealer do all the work as they will stand behind their work.

The dealer could look up the VIN number and tell you who the original owner was and what work was previously done on this vehicle.

Good luck

If I were in your shoes I would upgrade the clutch and flywheel, and just have them replace the transmission. Unfortunately the clutch & flywheel are wearable items which no warranty actually covers, it all boils down to how good of a relationship you have with your service department.

I would be nice and respectful when discussing this with the service advisor. At the same time be firm and stand your ground to what you believe is right. Try to push them to have it replaced at no cost. Or even split the cost of the clutch and flywheel; they pay half, you pay half.

I would do this also, I remember when I have a EVO8, I had a bad syncro and it was covered under warranty I upgraded the ACT and just paid for the ACT stuff and no labor

Tell them if they can't cover it all, to atleast install the clutch and flywheel parts you buy (i.e. performance clutch and lightweight flywheel).

gearboxes fail from time to time. most are OK, but faulty units are out there. no big deal, stuff happens. once you get the new gearbox your mind should be at ease. if you know how to drive a stick you should not have future problems. our gearboxes are not the smoothest, but in general they are sturdy units.

the manufacturer will send a new clutch disk as part of the gearbox assembly so you should not have to pay for a new clutch plate. Nissan periodically revises the gearbox units so revised clutch disk plates are needed to align with the updated gearbox. this is a package supplied for warranty gearbox replacements. the clutch plate is inexpensive compared to a gearbox.

i would pay to replace all other clutch components though since they are very inexpensive and labour is essentially $0: release bearing, shift fork, slave cylinder, etc.

your flywheel may not need to be replaced. if the surface wear appears even, no hot spots or contamination, just go ahead and have the dealer leave it as is. the OE flywheel is an expensive part since it is dual mass. most shops will not try to resurface it, which is difficult to do.

i had the gearbox on my '04 G35 replaced under warranty. it came with a new clutch disk, and i kept the original flywheel under dealer advisement. they said it looked OK, and i had a look to double check. i replaced other minor wear parts (not slave cylinder) and i think i paid ~$100 total. walked away with essentially a brand new gearbox assembly. i was happy with that.

Meh, for a daily driver at stock or about stock power levels I would stick with oem and not sacrifice driveability

Well, you should upgrade the clutch slave cylinder while you are in there as well. My 370Z manual transmission was replaced under warranty. The bill I saw was around 3K.

What you should do is inspect the clutch while the trans is out. If it's worn out, replace it. But I would just replace the clutch anyway, the OEM part is 400$ I think. Flywheel you can save if it's ok, the OEM is expensive.

If they don't cover it 100% see if they will just charge you for parts or split the cost for good will since its only 3 months since you bought it.

Man, sorry about the bad luck...great advice has been given here. In my opinion, its best to find a helpful dealership willing to service the customer....I've had better help and guidance at my local Nissan dealership and I have never purchased a single car from them.

Have you determined a cause? Monday driving cause?

Hope all gets straight...GL!
