Adding Shifter Paddles to 2009 G37 Journey: Are the plastic bits really needful?

So I'm looking into this. Are the plastic parties that come with "kits" really needed though? It looking at the second pic I found online, it is as if two filler plastic tables pop out and the paddles take their place.

Surely I'm missing something?

You need them. They replace the plastic pieces on your steering column that don't accommodate the paddles.

All I can say is do your homework before and check if you have the wiring that will accept the paddle shifters. I ended up buying a kit and not having the wires, and it was a btich to create a set myself, so I just sold em. Good luck!

^^+1.
Do your homework first. You may also call the dealership to inquire if your car is pre-wired.
I remember calling the dealership before buying my kit to confirm if my '09 Journey was pre-wired. Fairly easy DIY.

I suppose you could cut holes for the paddles your self but it's probably going to look like hell

i called the dealer before ordering mine, and they told me that it is not possible, and that has to be done only when ordering,
i still ordered them and was able to install them within 30 mins.. i have a 09 G37x sedan and it was wired, from what i have read so far, 09 and up come pre wired,

you do need the plastic pieces, as it relocated the tilt control,

Right, so verify prewired, and unless I'm willing to take a hacksaw route (I'm not), I'll need the appropriate plastic bit #1.

From what I recall from paddle kits, those kits included more than one piece of plastic. What other plastic pieces are needed besides #1? Or is that the only piece?

Thanks!

What is the total cost for this and how to tell if your specific vehicle is pre-wired?

I got my paddle shifter parts from OC INFINITI (OC Infiniti Dealer in Orange County - Parts Department.). I don't remember how much I paid.

From 2010 on, all G37s should be prewired for the paddle shifers. Otherwise the only way to be certiain is to remove the plastic trim around the steering column and check for the 2 paddle shifter wires.

Sounds like based on what tbulsara said you can't go the hacksaw route if you have power steering wheel tilt and telescope. Some early 09's aren't pre wired so it would be a good idea to double check by taking off the trim pieces before you order anything.

As far as cost I think I paid about $340 from Rick@PerryInfiniti.com

From what I've seen, expect to pay double for black interior.

i got a total of 3 plastic pieces, the top one i just used my old one as it was the same,
some say you have to remove the steering wheel, but i just turned it 90 degree for one screw and then 270 for the other screw and was able to do the install without removing the steering wheel.

I would suggest removing the existing plastic pieces to check if you have the wires there.

also i have the black interior and paid about the $340 range as well.
i got them from ebay, but it was from a infiniti dealer in the new york area.
