Ethanol Free Gas vs Gas with Ethanol
Ethanol Free Gas vs Gas with Ethanol
On a recent trip from Knoxville TN to a suburb of Indianapolis Indiana I started out my trip with a fill up from my local Kroger that uses "10% ethanol blend". Used the cruise control set on 80 mph for the majority of the trip and drove straight through.
Dash computer said 21.9 and calculated based on miles driven/fuel fill up was 22.5. I ended up filling with ethanol free gas at a station I found in Indiana and put about 50 miles of local driving on it. Computer was showing an average 22.1 mpg with around town driving on pure gas! Much better than I usually get.
The ride home was even better. Again, I set the cruise control on 80 and drove straight through. When I got home the computer was showing 25.9 mpg and I had 91 miles left. Not bad. Calculating based on miles driven and gas filled gave me a whopping 27.2 mpg!
"Fill up" for me is filing until the pump shuts off, removing the nozzle to "burp" my tank, putting the nozzle back in and pumping until it shuts off again.
Too bad its getting more and more difficult to find stations that sell pure gas....

We get a handful of ethanol free gas stations here in WI. I only use 91 Shell V-power, but it's almost $.50 more than 93 10% eth any where else. Wondering if it's worth it or not...

ethanol has 76,100 BTU's of energy per gallon whereas gasoline contains 114,000 BTU of energy per gallon. So you need to burn more ethanol to achieve the same level of power as you would with gasoline which decreases your mpg. Also blending ethanol with regular gas makes it burn slightly slower therefore increasing the octane rating. Typically 93 octane has up to 10% ethanol. Also ethanol gums up fuel lines and is just not good for engines. You actually pollute more with ethanol because you need more of it to burn. But its renewable right?
If you're looking for a station where you can get E0 gas in you area, try Ethanol-free gas stations in the U.S. and Canada
Found several stations in my area using that site. Easily worth it to go a grade lower if you that's what you have to do to get E-free gas. My 2ȼ

So after a couple weeks of driving on ethanol free gas and then switching back to the 105 EDIT: 10% crap at my local Kroger, I can certainly see a noticeable difference between the two.
Up front, my local Weigels that sells ethanol free charges close to 0.50 more per gallon than the premium with ethanol. It costs more to fill the tank but the mileage and range are better. Doing the math though, it costs about the same for the two.
