2009/2010 G37 Coupe: Is premium fuel a must
I don't have the exact verbiage from the owners manual, but I believe it says something to the effect of "if you don't have access to premium fuel, partially fill the vehicle with the highest grade available, and when possible, fill the rest with the suggested grade".
My question to you is, why not just use premium? Is a few dollars saved at fill up worth decreased performance and other possible issues down the road? Seriously... let's say you decide to use regular instead of premium and get about 16 gallons of fuel. In my area, premium normally costs about 25 cents more per gallon than regular fuel. That would be right at 4 dollars saved in the short term. In other words, not worth the trouble, to me.
Hell, even if you use an additive for every time you fill up, you would still be spending about 4-5 dollars for that, so you really haven't saved anything, have you? I'm not trying to flame or attack you, I just don't follow your logic.
Cliffs notes:
A) Use lower grade of fuel than recommended by the manufacturer, save about 5 dollars at the pump and then immediately spend the money buying additives to boost octane. Risk decreased performance, decreased efficiency, additional wear and tear by fuel detonating prematurely.
B) Use suggested grade of fuel, don't use extra (and in most cases unproven) additives, enjoy performance the way Infiniti designed and peace of mind.
Which do you choose?

Will your car explode from running 87? Absolutely not. There are a couple of guys on the forum they run lower octane fuel in their G exclusively and will tell you it's 100% OK.
Should you do it? I wouldn't and I wouldn't advise anyone else to either.

Stick to Premium, its even says so on your fuel door. Also stick to a good brand if possible. I use shell or husky and have never had problems. Tried Esso once and my car felt like it was choking... luckily I only put $20 in, so after a few days when the fuel light came on (Alert), I filled back up at Shell and was back to normal.
Premium fuel is higher octane and burns cleaner (15% lower emissions than regular fuel). You will have slightly better throttle response and fuel economy vs using regular fuel in the long run. Plus your engine will not get clogged up full of junk overtime and will run smoother and more efficiently.
So overall, there is almost no difference in cost, why would you want to put low grade cheap fuel in a high quality engine???

Actually where I live in Ontario the difference from regular to premium is around .13 cents a litre or .49 cents a gallon. I am paying the equivilent of around $5.40 a gallon on a good day. At 75 litres it costs me about $9.75 more every fill up. Figuring I fill up every 5 days I am spending around $600.00 more a year in fuel to use premium.
If I keep this car for 10 years I have accumulated an additional $6000 in fuel costs if the per litre cost never increases. (ha ha ha)
While I continue to pay the ridiculas premium prices I also have to disagree that skipping a coffee every now and then will cover the difference. In Canada it is a substantial enough difference to make you second guess using premium.
Just ranting about Canada's riduculas taxes...Got to love that "Free Health Care"

Allowing an engine with higher compression to have the timing more advanced, and slow down pre ignition.
When you run lower octane, the ECU will sense as knock and retard timing, result is lower horsepower only.
I'm in Canada - GTA in Ontario to be more specific and I run Shell Premium as much as I can - as it has NO ETHANOL. I have also filled up using Canadian Tire Premium - as it also has NO ETHANOL.
I'm no expert on Ethanol - but I know it does bad things to plastic gas tanks on Motorcycles - and I'm guessing the G tank is also plastic....
I've run Regular fuel once or twice over the last year - and I could not believe the difference in performance. Felt like I was driving a 4 cylinder Golf Vw.
Agree with on e of the other posters - in Canada (and specifically Ontario and quebec) we pay through the azz for fuel, and for premium fuel its even more insane. I try not to think about it.....

Nothing is free .... unfortunately many in this country don't realize that yet but slowly are when the truth is allowed to get out. But the great white north is a beautiful part of the world, just costs more to see it
