unusual rpm spike

so yesterday i was driving on highway round 60mph then had to brake suddenly because some dude in front of me decided to stop all of a sudden to turn without signaling..so i slammed my brakes then as i was tapped the gas SLIGHTLY afterward..my rpm spiked instantly to round 4rpm and the engine made an unusually loud revving noise..does anyone know what that is? definitely did not feel normal

That's normal. Nothing to worry about.

The car's ECU is trying to learn your bad driving habit... that's all...

I had this happen to me twice in a couple weeks. I took the car in to the dealer and they replace the "ECM" ( I think thats it ) and they gave me a new M battery. The problem has not come back and its been about a year now. I believe there is a TSB on this ploblem. The dealer tried to say there weren't any problems like this on the coupe, I pushed the issue and they took care of it for me anyways.

I remember it only happening after an abrupt stop.

Sounds like a little indecisiveness in the ECM. It was going to grab the lower gear and then thought better of it. :-)

sounds like when you slammed the breaks the trans downshifted to say 3 so when you hit the gas again you were still in 3rd gear and it wanted to take off.

This has happend a couple times in my '09. It seems to me that the transmission is downshifting to help slow down in a hard stop - which makes sense to me. Happens on normal to moderately hard stops when in DS mode and rarely in D.

Yea, i agree, its just the downshifting. I don't think there's anything you should worry about. When i drive a manual car, i usually do this too, kinda like a 'clutch-brake'. It helps a lot if you need to slow down real fast when you're going fast, the engine will 'rev down' which slows its down, and at the same time you're braking and slows the car down. Don't know if it make sense to you, but i think it is fine.

This is a feature, not a bug. So don't worry.

I don't think the car was trying to help you engine brake, but rather be ready for the insane acceleration after braking. What is the first thing you do after slamming on the brakes while taking a corner?
