DS mode, mash the throttle
DS mode, mash the throttle
Today in DS, I mashed the throttle after slowing down to make a left. It was beautiful. Screamed right up to about 80, all redlining through the gears. At which point I lifted my foot OFF the throttle. Here's the neat part -- the car would not upshift. She held the RPMs at, what, 5 grand or so. As if just waiting for me to mash her down again. BUT, as soon as I lightly pressed the throttle again at 65 to maintain speed, she upshifts into the appropriate gear, to about 3k, and then again to 2.5k or so, apparently "realizing" I'd blown my load and no longer was in a commando mood. How cool is this?
:-) It's true. What I meant is, it held the gear (not the 5k rpm), and slowly decelerated, but wouldn't upshift (as it will in D mode.) And I got the impression she in no way would have upshifted. Had I not hit the accelerator again, it would have just slowed and, eventually, *downshifted* again, always ready to go go go.
I love this car.
I love this car.
I have a manual G37, but when I had a BMW I used to use DS around town and then go to D for driving on the highway. I found this gave me response when I wanted it and smooth economy on the highway. I don't know if this algorithm would work with the G.

I use DS all the time. My only complaint is that it doesn't always pick up on the fact that you are backing off. For example, if I give some throttle to go quickly up a hill, then back off as I crest the hill, it will hold 3k RPMS and 3rd gear even with my foot completely off the gas. I'm looking for a nice coast down the hill, so I have to manually upshift, which takes me out of DS, so then I have to push back to D then back to DS since I don't have paddles. That is really annoying. I wish there was a mode to keep it in DS after a manual shift.

There are threads about adding Paddles to Gs that don't have it. Relatively easy from what I read. Question is: If you have the Paddle shifters which can be engaged in D mode temporarily, after a short time period the car goes back into D mode, can you do the same while in DS mode? If so, I would very interested in adding the Paddle Shifters - which come with the S versions of the G37.
Yes, DS mode rocks. BTW, not sure if you have noticed, but if you put the cruise control on when in DS mode it will immediately upshift and knock the high rpm down when the cruise engages. Was playing around with that on the highway recently.
