Newbie need info about oil changes

Hiya all...Last car was '03 Passat. Changed Mobil 0-40 every 7k or so and it was still going strong when I gave it to my eldest at 150k!

What do I do with my G37S? Synthetic? 7.5k?

Also, I could use the name of the good dealer down here in South Florida around Palm Beach county.

Love what I've seen so far on this forum...

Well you would read allot of info in this forum if you search and allot of mix suggestions . I am an AMSOIL guy ,but right now I am running RED line and I Love it .Dont know how accurate is the MPG read out in the infiniti. I have 2000 miles on the oil and I did a hour long trip and I did and average of 32 MPG and average 75MPH so I think that's pretty good.

Absolutely synthetic...I'm also using REDLINE. My take from using the search function and researching myself is most guys using AMSOIL, REDLINE, NISSAN ESTER and even GERMAN CASTROL are getting oil analysis recommendations of going 7-12K between changes if they aren't tracking their cars.

ROYAL PURPLE is less because it apparently tends to break down after awhile.

Either way...I'd do 7 to 7.5 if your a normal spirited driver using a true synth ester.

Just search it, and make up your own mind.

You'll get as many different opinions as we have members on this issue. My advice is to go with what's been working for you and also to look at objective quantifiable data, used oil analyses.

See these threads.

Ged, there are some very real, yet controversial reasons that
your VQ37 VVEL system will benefit from true synthetic
esters vs many very good oils using lesser amounts and various
subsitutes and lesser amounts of true PAOs. Here is a link to
a recent article that addresses (certainly not definitive) some
of the unique lubrication issues of the VQ37 and how Nissan
has addressed them...
http://www.motoiq.com/MagazineArticles/tabid/59/articleType/ArticleView/articleId/912/Revenge-of-the-Nerd--Nissan-in-the-sump-with-diamonds.aspx

I would highly recommend shorter intervals than 7K in this
engine before assuming that the engine/oil combination
you've selected will still be lubricating your engine well
at the end of 7k. As you know, an appropriate change
interval also depends so much on how hard you drive, length
of trips, climate, speed...and so on and so on. You might
consider doing a oil analysis around 4k after you pick
what you want to use and see how it's holding-up
for you before you take it to 7K or more. Good Luck

Mobil1 5/30 w/Mobil1 filter every 5k for me. I have no doubt there's better options, but I don't tear the car down the road regularly and Mobil 1 has a good track record over the years, at least for the kind of driving I do. And FWIW, I do all my own changes. The only time in the last 30 years that I haven't changed my own oil was a trip to Vegas and ended up in Vegas right at my change interval, so I took it to a Nissan shop (still checked for leaks and over/underfilling, and prayed my plug wasn't cross-threaded).

I haven't changed my own oil since I had a VW bug in the early 70's. But I think I will do...why not!

The oil change on this car is INSANELY easy. No cramped places for the filter, etc. No cut up hands. 4 bolts to fold down the debris guard.....there's the oil drain bolt and filter....done. Thanks to Infiniti.....gotta love Japanese engineering. The oil filter location on my Jeep Grand Cherokee Laredo is at the most ridiculous angle ever. Might as well pour dirty oil all over my serpentine belt. Thanks Chrysler.

I had a knocking noise continually with Mobile 1 5W30.

I brought it to a dealer, and they blamed me for using Mobile 1 as expected.
So, I've been using Nissan Ester Oil since then.
In fact, the engine sounds quieter and smoother with the Nissan Oil than with Mobile 1. I could tell a huge difference from outside.. I'm quite impressed with the ester oil so far.

When I changed with Mobile 1, I started to hear that knocking after driving 3k miles.
So far I've been driving approx 2.5k miles with the ester oil.
The engine is still quiet and smooth as it's supposed to be.

I'd not put anything but ester oil such as Motul, redline, and even Nissan Ester..

As you can see, there are a million plus opinions on what oil to use

I think one think that 99% of us WILL agree on, is to always use a full synthetic oil. What kind is up to you, and the threads Betty gave you are a great place to start
