Cool Flywheel?

Ok my friend has a 00' Eclipse and my friend said putting a new flywheel and transmission would make his car perform better would it be the best decision and the cheapest one?

Replacing the transmission is never cheap... Replacing the flywheel with a lightweight flywheel will FREE UP power and runs approximately 1k for parts and installation because I believe with the current flywheels available you'll need a new clutch too. This mod will let the engine rev faster providing better preformance however the drawback is that with the reduced weight you will need to shift/rev match more quickly because there less inertia to keep the the drivetrain spinning. You can get used to the faster shifting because the throttle responds more quickly but the other drawback is the potential for gear chatter (cement truck sound) when you switch to a lightweight single mass flywheel from a heavier dual mass one. While the drivetrain is under load you shouldn't hear the sound except possibly between 1500K-2000K Rpm but at idle it will most likely sound less than ideal. The sound also grows louder the more miles the tranny has on it. From what I've read, I don't believe there have been many changes to the transmission from the G35 version to the current one in the G37 (6MT's) so its highly probable that the G37 transmission behaves much the same way. I'd like to hope more anti-backlash compensation was incorporated into the current 6 speed but I haven't hear of anyone who has replaced their flywheel and if they are experiencing increased noise. Hope this helps.

I would say it's one of the middle/later stage type modifications one would make to a stock car as there are many other "weak points" to address (tires, suspension/brakes, bolt ons and the sort).

Getting a lighter flywheel/aftermarket clutch will definitely change the driving dynamics, though.

wonder how an AT would respond to a lighter flywheel

Good question...I would assume it would respond similarly. When lifting off the throttle, RPMs would fall faster, assuming it's still in gear. More responsive throttle response as well.

Flex plates are what connects our crank shaft to the torque converter. They're like the clutch on an MT. Flywheel is just there for rotational inertia I believe correct me if I'm wrong please

Basically.... Its a bit more complicated than that but you are basically correct. Theres really nothing that can be done to an automatic tranny to reduce rotating mass like a lightweight flywheel will on a stick. Companies have come out with valve body upgrades and shift kits to make autos shift faster but thats about it. If a unit comes out for the G37 beware.... word on the street is that the valve body kit for the G35 was garbage
