Synthetic Oil...??

IMO it is too early. I would at least wait until you hit 15k. I waited until 20k just because I was advised that Jap cars arent fully broken-in until around 30k. I did a hard break-in too.
However, in light of this "ticking" sound that are coming from some engines, it might be a good idea to start on a synthetic early to prevent problems later on. (I have not had a ticking noise at all).

There is no too early. Switch whenever you want to. Many cars come with synthetic as the initial fill. Synthetic oil does not delay or prevent engine break-in. Also, no need to change at 1200 miles, just wait until the normal 3750 mile interval. Then change every 7500 miles thereafter.

Same controversy exists for hard break-in vs recommended break-in. Research exists but it is still ones personal decision.
If you are looking for someone to tell you what you should do than you wont find it. No one wants to be responsible for the damages that might be caused to your car or voiding your warranty. We can only give advise but can not make you do anything.
I strongly recommend that you wait until at least 5k at the earliest to switch to a full synthetic (ester based). I am not a oil guru but I do know that conventional oil picks up debris better than synthetic. However, synthetic lubricates 10x better and prevents wear. Since your engine is still adjusting and breaking in the metal parts, even after the initial 1200 miles, that it would be wise to keep conventional until you feel that your car is ready.

I'm in the same boat, wondering when to switch to full synthetic...
and I don't know how you guys have such a long interval for your oil changes, I don't plan to go much further then 3,000 miles per oil change
