Cobb AccessPORT w/ custom mapping and tune, Say NO to Dyno Comp in AZ!
the set-up
I headed off to Dyno-Comp performance, which is a local performance shop here in AZ, Scottsdale to be exact. They, from what I could tell, were a reputable shop that was Cobb certified, renntech certified etc.. They've been in magazine articles for their custom tuned cars and all that jazz.. I had called Tuesday and spoke with the owner, Richard, and let him know the situation I'm in. I purchased a Cobb AP, and have been working with John Shafer at Cobb trying to get custom tuned maps for my car via data logging. Richard assured me they could do everything, they work with Cobb, they had data logging capabilities, he'd hook me up and charge like 40 - 50 bucks per dyno/data log session until the maps were right etc.. I show up this morning, meet richard, tell him about the forum and how I'm doing a review/write up on this process, and he says "oh yeah, I've heard of those things, I'm way too busy to go on those things and chat with people about nothing." I was like,
but let it slide. We walk out and he pulls my car on the dyno for 2 quick base runs with the stock maps installed on my ecu. My car put down 289.1HP. I thought that was incredible, because when I got my car dynoed there a couple months ago, same dyno, same shop, with my full exhaust and JWT intakes it only put down 267.9 HP. So, adding the Stillen pulley and Gen. 3 intakes gave me 21.2 HP!! Granted it was months ago, different time of year, temp. etc.. Anyways, he asks if I can take a picture of the A/F read out with my camera to send to John at Cobb for the tuning, I was like WTF! I mentioned the data logging, and how the process was supposed to be done, and what we agreed upon and then he asks me what data logging software I'm gonna be using, and wanted to see it. I was like
I reminded him of our conversation AGAIN and he said he did have the capabilities and he'd data log the car and send it off to John at Cobb. So I think the process has begun and sit back and wait, and wait, and wait, and wait... During this time, he went to my car twice, and I saw him do 2 pulls on the dyno each time, I mean only 2 pulls??? We need atleast 5 to 6 to let the ecu adjust and normalize. After about 3 hours, I finally just walked into his office and was like WTF! Whats going on, how any maps have you tried, what has John at Cobb been saying, are you making progress etc.. WHATS GOING ON!! He hands me a dyno sheet showing 301.6 HP and says that he talked to John at Cobb, and thats the best they can do. I told him that was only a 4.3% gain over my stock run, and I was expecting more. He proceeded to tell me my aspirations were out of touch working with a NA car. He then proceeds to charge me $240 for services. I was like, "you said $50 per dyno session, I watched you do 3 total, a base run, and 2 others?" He told me with the data logging and AF readings etc.. blah blah blah.. it was more $. Then get this, he told me my wheels didn't look good, and I needed to buy some $95 15mm spacers for the rear if I wanted it to look right ?? I'm like WTF x a million. THEN, he said my battery needed to be replaced with a $165 Optima red top battery he had for my car, cause my 500 watt amp was gonna drain my stock one repeatedly, even though my system has been installed since April with ZERO issues. The guy is a douche! I paid him and was on my way, only gaining 12.5 HP.
The Plot Twist
Now here's where it gets interesting, and I get furious
I get home, and boom, John Shafer from Cobb is calling me asking whats going on? I'm like, what do you mean? I'm at home, and the tune is done. John was dumbfounded to say the least. He said he had literally been sitting, waiting to hear from Richard, he had been emailing Richard at DynoComp repeatedly asking for updates. John told Richard to do a minimum of 5 runs on the dyno per revision of the map, and Richard flat out lied and said he had. Richard never even sent him a final dyno read out, and NEVER DATA LOGGED MY CAR! I repeat, Richard never data logged my car or sent any info in that regards to John at Cobb. John was very apologetic and couldn't believe the shadyness and service I recieved at dyno-comp. He told me He wasn't even close to being done with my mapping, and wanted to do atleast 2 more revision, expecting to gain another possible 10HP or so, plus get my AF levels exact. He was pissed cause he was using my car to help with maps for the gen. 3 intakes and headers. We are going to work on some data logging utilities I can use, so I can complete my tune and get everything right.
The Conclusion
Don't anyone ever go to Dyno-Comp in Scottsdale AZ, they lie, cheat, and steal. I'm very pissed at them, thier service sucked, and they were aragant A$$'s about everything. John, and everyone else at Cobb, has shown me nothing but the best customer service and care, and has been a joy to work with. The Accessport is an AWESOME product, with many capabilities, very advanced in what it can do and what it can control on our cars. The product is solid and I highly reccomend it.
As for data logging and long distance custom map making, I was told by an anonymous source at Cobb, that the software for custom maps will be released within 6 weeks, so anyone with an AP can easily go get a custom tuned map specific for their vehicle at any Cobb authorized tuning facilities, just don't go to Dyno-Comp!!
The Bright Side of things
I'm going to update this thread with any new info, and my updated mapping and HP gains once me and Cobb work out the data logging issues. Cobb AP kicks a$$, is reliable, and they are one of the best companies I've ever worked with. Plus when Richard at dyno-comp converted my final run to what it would be on a dyno-jet dyno my car was putting out 331.8 WHP and 398 flywheel HP. And it's only going to climb once the tuning is done, and corrected
The Evidence
Here are pics of the shop, dyno's etc.. and a vid of a dyno run
Original dyno with full exhaust and JWT

Base Dyno with full exhaust, gen3 intake, pulley

base dyno AF values

So called FINAL dyno after incomplete mapping

if you catch my drift

I will continue to get this car tuned. I was really disappointed with the experience today. I waited for data and dyno plots and never got a satisfactory response, and I really feel that AZg37 did not get the max benefit from the tuning....in fact it is really hard to say if those power numbers are even right....2 runs is not proper testing for a map revision. I did....much later and after I requested more info.... get an email that said the Trims were within 3% and timing was at an acceptable level. I would like to have been able to try different approaches on this car....richer/leaner...more/less timing combos to see what this car likes with AZ gas.
In the end we will get this car dialed in, however it is pretty poor that this started this way.
Not every customer is as understanding or willing to work thru crappy situations as AZg37 is, and for that I thank him. Hopefully, we can get some more dyno data for you guys. Either way, this car will be tuned...as AZg37 will get the logging software and we can play with different setups.
Thanks for your patience and understanding.

Actually you have the guy caught red handed in a lie, can't John call Richard and demand he datalog your car at no cost to complete what was originally agreed upon or his certification will be revoked. Worst case is you save the next guy the headache if Richard declines.
