Guy question on 6mt
Guy question on 6mt
Hey guys.. these deals are crazy on the g37 6mt. Im wondering what i should do. I kno how to drive stick, well not the best but i can pull it off. I havent drove it in a while but once i take it the car out agian it would come back to me like nothing. Now the truck i drove in stick was one of my dads work trucks, dodge dakota. Now im wondering how much easier the g37 would be to drive in 6mt. THe clutch def jumps etc. Easier or harder to handle.?
My situation is im 17 first car. Save about 100 $$ a payment.
Stick just adjust with the truck, and once i respectfully get it down get the g37 in 6mt.
I also live in ny stop n go stop n go. But like it would come to me.
Everyone i talked to are telling me to go with the 6mt all my friends that have a car in stick, or those who have a car in stick. Even my father is telling me to go 6mt, he says u cant buy a sports car and not have fully control over it, + calling me a lil girl if i dnt get stick lol.
So give me ur opinionn on what i should do. Im hinting 6mt..

I recommend a 6mt BUT make sure you learn how to drive one first. Have your dad show you or one of your friends. My second car was a 97 Geo Metro which was a stick. I drove it off the lot not really able to drive a stick. I had done it a couple times before but I would always stall. After a month or so of this I had my best friend who drove a stick very well show me how to drive one. After his 1hr session, I was an expert. We went to our high school which has an open road and drove up and down the road until I could do it smoothly then we went to a steep hill so I could do it without rolling back and stalling. The clutch is also light on the G37 so you shouldn't have any troubles.
In all honesty, this is my first manual. I only drove stick for an hour or so total in broken up sessions before I bought the G. Compared to the other cars I was practicing on (Integra & Tacoma w/ a stage 3 race clutch)...the G was much harder to drive. I managed to stall almost every time I took it out. Took about a week to get it down (with practicing at night). At the time, I actually liked the heavy clutch in the Tacoma better because there was more feedback. Once I got used to the G's clutch, I ended up really enjoying it. I'm alot better now (3 weeks later) and actually raced a G35 coupe today...but its not the friendliest car to learn stick compared to the other cars I was practicing on.
Your dad and friends are right though...if you buy a sports car, you're gonna want it in manual. Much more fun to drive.

thanks guys.. yea i mean i dont have a problem with stick, i almost positive i would perfer it, prob take acouple more lessons before i do pick it up. And how did that race go with a g35 jlai?
I say get stick no matter what, I'll be driving stick for as long as I can.
However, the clutch in the G37S that I test drove this weekend was extremely soft and hard to tell where it "grabbed" compared to my 350Z that has a pretty stiff clutch/grab point. I'm sure I'll get used to it and probably love it after driving it some more and getting used to where the clutch engages.

get a 6mt. u may not fully kno how to drive stick but u WILL learn how trust me. u shouldnt let that hold u back. all concepts of stick driving are the same its just the cars that are different so if u drove stick before u can drive this car

never drove a G in manual form til after i made the purchase...kinda scary driving home in it from the dealer...was about a 30 min drive
no regrets on getting 6mt

I didn't know how to drive stick when I bought my first car in 1995 (87 Mazda RX-7), my dad drove it home. Anyhow...12 years later, I find myself back in a stick with the G. Although you don't forget how to drive one...after 12 years it takes a while to get use to again. So far I have just a little under 1k on the G....and I am loving it. And the clutch engagement is definitely much smoother than the older coupes and the 07 sedan I test drove. Once I get past break-in...it will be really fun to drive. The throttle response on a manual just can't be beat. Not to say that getting an auto would be girlish...in fact, if the auto came in a 6spd...I would probably be on the fence right now. But a manual does give you more control of the car. For some, it's hard to understand...they only see it as an inconvenience....but once you get use to it...you'll know what I'm talking about. Ultimately....get what YOU want. Good luck.
My G is my first manual. I drove a '92 BMW 325 around for a week beforehand. I've had the G 3 weeks now and I'm shifting just fine. Its definately a little more finicky than the BWM was. I've found that if you give it just a little bit of gas when you're letting off the clutch on an upshift itll be a lot smoother. I also tend to neutral->first about 1250-1750 RPMs to start off.
Reverse I think is the most difficult. It just wants to give it so much power idling in reverse.
Its totally been worth it, even in traffic (fun!). I'll never drive an auto again. 6th->4th + gas = bye bye anyone on the highway.

I test drove the AT and bought the MT. The AT was sooooo boring to drive. Smoother albeit
.
As soon as these subs get in no one will be able to tell the difference between bad shifting and the bass line anyway.

i was on a similar boat as u but a lil more experience...I had about 500 random miles logged in stick on various cars before the G. I would NOT recommend being an amatuer when u get a 6mt its a sporty shifter and the clutch is pretty sporty too, it does not shift as easy and Fisher Price as Hondas do. I would tweak ur ride on a rental or by some means first because i would not want to grind gears or stall in my new G too much. I mean i have stalled at low speeds like when edging up in my own garage a few times but ive really gotten better. I still need some work in my 1st gear and 2nd gear and also in not riding the clutch....
Trust me get the 6mt. If you get the Auto it will be about 1-2 mos. and you will feel an itch for more, its hard to explain with words but you'll have this desire to want your car's engine in your hands more, you'll want to control you own RPMs and use both hands and legs - it makes driving a complete experience. With an Auto drives get boring over time - with a 6mt every ride is fun. It's just more expert and sporty. Besides with a 6th gear on the highway you'll get better mileage and lower revs...

I would recommend that you learn how to drive stick properly first. First of all driving a six speed is different from driving a five speed. You cannot drive a five speed like you drive a six speed. With a six speed you have to give it more gas, and of course the clutch is more sporty so you don't want to mess it up if your only somewhat experienced with stick. Do not buy the car if you are not 100% ready, meaning that you have to be confident behind the wheel, and not be nervous to drive your car because you just learned to drive stick. You don't want to burn out your clutch on a brand new car!!!
Dude, go for the stick! This is my 2nd manual I learned on a BMW and yea I stalled the crap out of it at first so if the same happens to you, don't worry. I don't think you do much damage by stalling it. You'll learn quick. I found it only takes a few minutes to learn to drive, the rest of your life to perfect it but you get better and better all the time.
I test drove the auto and wasn't very impressed. Then I took the MT for a spin and I was sold. It felt quicker but more importantly, it was so much fun to drive!!!
Also, this might be my last car in a MT because auto technology is getting better and better all the time. Pretty soon MT will be rare so I figured I'll get one while I can
The only tricky part is starting from a complete stop while on a hill. Rolling back will get you worried but do what I did. I drove to my school's parking garage on a weekend and practiced going up the ramps. It wasn't long until I mastered it.
Get the MT and you'll never look back. Don't worry, you'll figure it out. Millions of us had the same situation and we all survived.
