Yo sup fellas im worried about this oil problem i hope it isnt a problem in the new g37.. Im hoping the refinements include this oil problem. My cousin recently started to have this problem with the prev gen. Thing that has me worried well is i heard nissan does not accept that they have a problem with this.
The discusion of if and when to switch to synthetic oil has been debated for a long time and will be for many more. Many people automatically think that they need synthetic oil because it has to be better then normal oil. No that is not the case at all. Synthetic oil was designed to prolong service intervals on cars. Most major car companies that send there cars out from the factory with synthetic oil require it be changed much less. I.e. BMW, Mercedes, Porsche, Audi all want the oil changed around 12k-15k each change. Infiniti I.e. nissan requires you to change your oil every 3750 miles. Because of this the oil from the factory is not synthetic. If you are putting synthetic in your car and changing it any sooner then at least 10k miles you are wasting your money. Synthetic oil is designed to not burn like normal oil and does not break down. Hense you can go much much longer between oil changes. If you take a sample of normal oil and a sample from the same make car with the same amount of miles and the oil has been in the same amount of time you will find they will be basically identical. Same amount of wear same amount of metals in the oil. Now if you took another sample say at like 10k miles you would find the normal oil has been broken down and would be in much worse condition. The reason for not changing over to synthetic so early in the infiniti again is that the motor was designed to be used with normal oil not synthetic. So when you have a brand new motor and start it off with normal oil the seals throughout the whole motor and now pre programmed in a sense to break in with normal oil. Because the normal oil and synthetic have different internal compounds if you then add synthetic oil to a motor right away that has been started off in the break in period with normal oil you changed the seating of the seals and rings. Usually causeing them to not seal properly or deteriorate. which in turn causes oil leaking into places its not suppose to be. The reason most car compaines tell you not to switch over until around 20k is because thats the common mileage when a motor's seals are pretty set. When i had an S2000 it was the same thing. Do not switch over until 20k. If you plan on having your oil changed on the normal recommended service intervals that infiniti says i.e. 3750 dont bother using syn. you will save yourself money.
Yes, I was told something similar from my Nissan tech friends here. According to various Nissan/Infiniti tech workshops, it's been noted that the VQ engine continues to break in up to about 24,000 km (15,000 miles). For myself, I waited until I had about 20,000 km on my G before switching to synthetics.

I already tracked my car stock, and would love to do it again with mods for comparison.
Ooops, no thread jacking.... yes, OIL! It's almost time for my next one, im at 3200 miles.
So UNV-IT46 and others... if u were to change ur own oil on the G37, which 5w-30 brand will you use, and which filter?
GORD!! Wassup man.... plans for grounding gear for G37? Will the same from G35 work?

If Infiniti will not allow or accept longer drain intervals with synthetic oil, then, to keep Infiniti happy, it may not make fiscal sense to switch to full synthetic oil. However, even with the recommended 3,750 mile oil change interval, it might make fiscal sense to switch to semi-synthetic in high heat or cold situations.
I change my oil because it gets dirty not because it breaks down, I was thinking of changing over to syn, the oil will last longer but is still dirty so I decided for now to stick with regular oil and change more often to keep it clean.
Good point. For some people, the oil gets dirty faster than it would break down; for others, the opposite may be true, it depends on driving style. This is because oil breaks down even if it just sits in the oil pan undriven. That's why they say change oil after so many miles or so many months, whichever comes first. Unlike oil sitting in an unopened bottle, the oil has already come into contact with contaminants that break the oil down.
For normal driving, a daily driven G will likely get the oil dirty faster so may benefit from more frequent oil changes, whereas a weekend driver may benefit from a longer break down period offered by the synthetic oils.
For dirty environments (i.e. lots of dirty air), it may still be better to change oil often to remove the contaminants that get into the engine.
For those who track their cars, chances are you drive the engine much harder and may need an oil that won't break down as easy yet still need to change the oil as often if not more.
If you do go synthetic, as others mentioned, it's probably better to consider switching only after the manufacturer's recommendations (i.e. after the 24,000K / 15,000 miles) and use a transition process (semi then full synthetic).
