Maybe the particular car I drove that was acting up.. but when i was looking at the stick at idle with my hand off.. it was bouncing around and vibrating so much that it looked like an item that should belong in a porno movie or a sex shop.

Yeah you must of pre-production because it didnt shake any more than any other manual transmission.

Honda's have shift-by-cable transmissions. The cable takes the vibration thru the slack and you do not feel it through the stick. Most RWD performance cars have direct-shift transmissions, where the stick is directly moving the collars around in the tranny. This will make the stick vibrate in rhythm with the engine revs, rock slightly with the engine on sudden torque events, lean slightly as the rear suspension encounters bumps, etc.

All totally normal and part of the RWD performance car experience. Many cars that should not have cable-shift do have them, and their sticks are lifeless. A lifeless stick is not something an enthusiast driver would prefer.

Smart for Infiniti to leave it direct-shift and not take any extraordinary measures to dampen the stick.

I also wonder does it have to do with the fact its rear wheel drive and you said Hondas dont do it maybe its beacuse its front wheel drive. not sure though
It has nothing to do with FWD, RWD, direct transmission, etc. It is just poor vibration dampening or perhaps poor engineering.

ZERO vibration coming from a RWD 6-speed NSX (rear-engined and about as direct a transmission as you are going to get).

If it makes people feel better that vibration is keeping them connected to the car, more power to you. Earthquakes make me feel more connected to the earth.

Let me please give you a tissue to wipe away your tears for a little vibration in your shifter...it might cause carpal tunnel in your frail hands....

Get a life bro, its a sports coupe...You have to leave a little rawness to the car, this isnt a Lexus. Besides, the G37 is the successor to the raw G35 coupe, the sister to an even raw'er 350Z. Nissan FTMFW

guys chill out.. check this vid out:
https://www.myg37.com/forums/g37-coupe/173802-videos-shifter-vibration-menus-and-voice.html

from here you can see the vibration is really not that bad at all! I guess the particular one I test drove was just a freak occurance, but take my word that it was alot worse..

As for the Hondas, yes it is true they do use cable shifters for the FF layout. However, the S2000 is a FR, yet no virbations are transmitted through the shifter.

I initially started this thread just to see everyone's opinion. I still feel that even though some have stated this is a "raw" and "sportier" feeling (which I agree with to some extent) and some of you have simply stated "who cars", I still question how it looks inside the gorgeous interior.

i think there is a little less vibration in the G37 compared to the G35. BUT you have to remember that since the car is rear wheel drive the tranny is directly under the stick. you're directly controlling the tranny when you shift, its not shifting through a mechanical connection to a tranny at the front axle.

Wow.. We've gone from tail lights, to the car being higher, to the key fob being a bad idea because you "loose" it, to the shifter vibration. Listen, if you don't want shifter vibration, get an Auto. BOOM, problem solved, who cares if Honda or Toyota, etc don't have vibrations in their shifter. Just let it go. From what i'm hearing, the butter engagement more than makes up for it.

If you are so familiar with porno movies/sex shop items, what's your problem? With that much familiarity, it seems like you would want to buy a car that brought back such memories.

When at idle, you can totally see the stick vibrating like crazy, as well as when you have it in gear and take your hand off the shifter. You can also totally feel it too when your hand is on it. While it is not a huge problem, it just makes the luxurious interior look cheap to see the shifter bouncing around. Heck, even low-end Honda's don't vibrate at all!

I know this is a "problem" that the G35C used to have. Has there been a fix for this in the past?

Have you guys noticed the same in the G37s? Does it seem to bother you guys as much as it does me?
I finally got to test drive a G37S today. On the positive side, the clutch was very good. Coming from a Honda, I found the shifter just horrid, it felt like a cheap piece of plastic that was hanging by a thread and about ready to break. The vibrations were absolutely terrible and the engagement vague. I'm sure part of it was that I was not used to it, but I could not drive with confidence that when I shifted that the car was in the gear I wanted. They say it is an improvement over the G35, I can only imagine how bad that must have been. I got back in my Honda and the shifter is rock solid, it moves through the gate like silk, the touch is light but there is an obvious engagement when it comes into gear. I've always heard that Honda makes the best manual transmissions, now I know why.

Anyway, it left me disappointed with the car and so now I'm uncertain about what I'll do.

i guess i dont have much to compare to except maybe mazda (RX8 and miata)...but my G shifts are really smooth but not as smooth as the mazdas...and i'm not even an experienced manual driver ( this is my first car with a manual)...i've only missed a gear once in my G

the shifter does vibrate but only a lil bit while in neutral...and hardly at all when in gear
