Custom cold air intake

I know I cant be the only one that finds in insane that CAI's for our cars are $300 (if you get a steal on a used system) to $700. Has anyone had any luck making their own custom CAI? Piping really should only cost around $50-70 and the filters should be about $40-50 each. Also, are you throwing any codes because you're not attaching the sensor? If you've got pics or dimensions, post em!

It's cost/quality prohibitive. Other cars only need half the intake piping/filters ours do. Even your quote for a home made system is $170+. At that point, it makes sense to buy a used system that has some engineering behind it.

Edit: And I just realized this is a really old thread. Look what searching does for you, lol. At least you got the answer you've been waiting for all this time.

So I too did not want to spend nearly $400 + on an intake setup so i pieced one together. Used silicone hoses from siliconeintake.com (one 30 deg and one 13" or so long straight) and 90 deg aluminum pipe bends from cxracing. It took a little bit of cutting a tig welding (i did using my dad's tig) but in all wasn't that difficult. It's all 2.5" to mate up easily to maf sections i cut off a spare air boxes.

Almost forgot. The intake filters were from Z1 and are the same used on their kit. More pics.

Nice! No issues? Did you fashion a bracket to support the filters?

What was your total cost? I guess you'd have to have some spare airboxes laying around too.

I ran out of time to do that but it's definitely on the list to do this weekend. I'll post pics after it's done.

I got the airbox from a local guy who went ls swap and he was going to throw them away. So i lucked out and got them for free. The 90 deg aluminum pipes were $38 plus shipping. The silicone couplers (straight and 30 deg) $42 plus shipping. Hose clamps were sourced local for $10. The filters were $50 plus shipping. Total with shipping for me was $186.42. I bought everything over the course of 3 months then took an evening to make it all work. I did save myself a bit of money by welding the aluminum pipe myself, not all bad considering it was my first time with pipe and not the usual thick bracket I am use to TIG welding. I had the 'air baffle delete' silicone intake couplers already.

Good. Definitely something you don't want to overlook. That's the mistake I made and that's how I ended up with no AC for a year...

I'm not even seeing any results for pepboys with the K&N part number 69-7078TS. Hell the cheapest i can find is ebay for $299. Also the K&N intake kit is more a 'short ram' pulling most of the air from the engine bay were the setup i made is similar to the Z1 and Admin tuned kits, pulling air from just behind the grill.
