best way to get rid of rust/buildup left from front license plate?

I just removed my front license plate because my state doesn't require one and there's an outline of the license plate on the bumper... It looks like rust/some kind of dirt?? What kind of spray should I use to get rid of this? Also, is it normal for the front license plates to be screwed right into the bumper?

Try some rubbing compound.

And yes they screw right to the bumper.

Thanks, I'll have to get some of that stuff. About the bumper, seems like a weird way to do it... it looks weird with 2 little holes randomly on the bumper, I guess I'll just buy some screws and put them there for now..

Is that safe on cars? Mine is white so I'm scared it'll leave a residue...

Check out evaporust. This stuff is absolutely amazing. I just used it on some nasty bolts that turned new again.

Rubbing compound or a wax with a mild abrasive will work.

Shake well. Use an old sock or rag and rub right where the discoloration is in 2-3" circles. After you do that use it on the door handle cup and erase those fingernail marks. After that use it on the head lights and remove the yellow. Clay the top surfaces and front bumper of the car then use it again on the whole car. Before you start go get some Eagle one Nano wax and apply to everything, headlights, windows (WAAAY better than rain-x), even the wheels (but not mirrors) and will make almost everything but the stickiest of bugs fly off with a hose. Its a long weekend.
