polishing how to

the sep '11 edition of car and driver has a how to section which gives instructions on how to properly polish a car. it states to thoroughly wash the car then without drying it apply a polishing compound using a orbital buffer with a damp pad. i thought that the car and the polishing pad should be dry while polishing. is this a different method and does it work?

maybe going to car and driver for detailing advice is like going to mcdonalds for advice on good food?

A little damp isn't going to hurt it. But you don't want the car or pad to be completely saturated. In fact, your pad should be primed and slightly damp. The car doesn't need to be wet though.

Your last statement sums it up.
