caring for black rubber trim

How are you owners caring for you black rubber trim on your g37s?
My car is a 2009 and has in garage.
However it looks 'weathered' to me. It doesn't have that black shine.

The dealer did a detail on it and i am wondering if they put something on they shouldnt have, whether it never really was a popping black, or just crappy trim..

thoughts?

I use 301 Aerospace Protectant on the black rubber trim and the seats on my boat. It is a bit pricey but it does the job and has UV protection.
I meant 303 instead of 301.

303 aerospace on black trim, door seals, interior trim and seats, doors, etc...anything black or rubber (except tires, too expensive for that).

A lot of the tire dressing and shine products that owner's put on their tires are detrimental to the rubber. 303 does not harm the rubber and the UV retardent in it actually helps the tire life. That's why I use 303 on the tires as well.

303 is good, I use it. But IMO, for restoring the blackness and shine to rubber trim, nothing comes close to Chemical Guys Black on Black. My favorite hands down.

303 is definitely good stuff!

And sorry to jack your thread a little bit...but does anyone else have scuffs (actually more likes scratches) from your shoe on the inside of the door panel next to the speaker? I have a coupe and everyone else that owns one too knows how freaking heavy the door is. Well one day when I was opening the door to get in the car, the door didn't stay open as I sat down. And as it was closing, I tried to quickly pull my leg in but my foot ended up hitting the door panel and now there's a long scratch there...not even a scuff.

So does anyone know of a way to restore the door panel and get rid of the scratch or somehow blend it in a little bit?

If you wipe it with a microfiber towel or wash mitt and get black marks on either, then it's oxidation that's making the trim look weathered. Putting product on oxidized trim just masks the problem. I use a good all-in-one (e.g. Klasse, Zaino, or whatever) on a PC and go over that trim the same as the rest of the car. The pad turns black, and the trim looks brand new for a year or so afterwards until it gets oxidized again.

Rubber Seals

The seals on most vehicles are no longer made of natural rubber; vehicle manufacturers use a specialized synthetic material called ethylene propylene diene monomer (EPDM). Natural rubber, or blends containing natural rubber, just cannot endure the direct exposure to sunlight (ultraviolet light) and the harmful-to-rubber oxidizing gases in our atmosphere.

The seals around the vehicles lights (headlights, brake and indicator lights, etc) and the soft seals around doors, windows, sunroof’s, hood and trunk are constantly being flexed and compressed all the while being subjected to a hostile environment. For maintenance use a product that contains glycerine to maintain the look and feel of the material

Periodically clean using Iz einszett 'Plastik-Reiniger' an intensive, non-corrosive, non-acidic two-phase deep cleaner for that removes grime build-up thoroughly and effortlessly, these chemicals restore the original texture, tactile feel and resiliency

Protection – using 1z einszett Vinyl Rubber Care & Potectant "Tiefenpfleger” provides a temperature-resistant seal and a low-shine matte finish Dust-resistant and retards the fading effects of UV rays to keep exterior ‘rubber’ and vinyl looking like new.

Ultra violet (UV-B) protection is a sacrificial / renewable component; this is due to the UV protection layer being degraded by exposure to the elements (sun, sand, road or sea salt, and etc) so it is imperative that you renew it and needs to be re-applied on a regular basis (dependent upon location climatic condition)

Alternative products-

1z einszett Gummi-Pflege rubber protective, durability measured in months it has a little sponge on top of the bottle so you always get the right amount of product on your weather-stripping or rubber seals. Once applied to rubber they will take on a dark but natural shine. Use bi-annually to provide protection to avoid rubber from hardening or freezing.

Highly recommended

• Iz enzett Gummi Pflege (Rubber Care)
• Zymol Seal - a natural plant anti-oxidizing agent, it will prolong the useful life of the seal by restoring the original moisture and resist tearing and sticking
• Wurth Rubber Care Gel Stick - is silicone-free, biodegradable, and water repellent

The 303 Aerospace Protectant is a great choice for UV protection. If you want some restoration the Einszett 1Z Gummi Pflege Stift Rubber Care Stick or the TUF SHINE Black Restore Kit.

Will any of these products remove any light scratches from the black trim around the windows? If so which is best for that?

I don't know of any product that removes scratches from rubber. The Einszett 1Z Gummi Pflege Stift Rubber Care Stick and the TUF SHINE Black Restore Kit would be my choice though if you need to clean up scuffs and discoloration. I don't think anything can fix scratches in rubber since material has been physically removed. With the clear coat of your car you can polish it so optically it's less visible, but I don't know of any process similar for rubber.

Klasse All In One could polish out scuffs on hard trim like those around the windows. If it is the softer rubbery trims, clean it thoroughly with a microfiber and then dress it with 303.
