Question Last two questions before first detail

Ok... so I am almost ready to detail ... going to wash then use 205 polish glaze and seal.

1. Do I need to clay bar if my paint feels really smooth? Is it a Must prior to polishing?

2. How do you "prep pad" before polishing?

Thanks!

1) No. Take a plastic bag and put it over your fingers. Then feel your paint. I clayed my car the first time I polished it and the clay really didnt take off much at all. After I polished it, I sealed the car and re-applied sealant. 6 months later when it was due for another minor polish, I noticed that there really wasnt much at all bonded to the paint, so I skipped the clay step. Only if the paint has a lot of bonded contaiminants, then I clay.

I assume you have the M105 and M205? If so, read this first.

What he said about claying. If the bag makes any sound then you need to clay. Another way to do it is just put some water on the paint and run your fingers (with decent pressure) across the water. If it squeaks, clay. If there is no noise, you're fine

Also, don't be claying every time you detail. You should really only clay 1x/year maybe 2 at the most

Using a clay bar is never a must but it's a step you can always do. Even brand new cars can come with plenty of contaminants, it just depends on how it was cared for. I personally recommend using a clay bar just about any time you are going to polish. If interested our DI Accessories Gentle Fine Grade Clay is on sale this month so it's a great value.

Two methods I use to prep my new or clean pad. You can use a little extra polish and spread it with your clean fingers over the face of the pad. That way the pad is not completely dry. A few drops should be all you need. The other option is misting a little pad conditioner on the pad (Chemical Guys Polishing Pad Conditioner).

As Dj farhan said we'd love to see some great pics as well.

Let us know if you have any additional questions.
