... to "Detail" my car (back with my Audi A4, before i got my g37) I used to use terry cloth to dry my car, cheap 3 dollar detergent suds (like autozone name brand kinda ****) with a sponge that I now wouldn't use to wash my tires with.

No Joke, I used to use Windex as a quick detailer, for the car's paint.

I used to use Turtle wax .

... But did you guys do before you learned proper car care

 

oh man, no windex. no turtle wax. If you want over the counter products i would recommend meguiar's for all of their products (except tire foam since i have never tried). And a few moth products. Never use windex anywhere on a car imo. Get some nice microfibers from detailerimage.com eshine.ca or even canadian tire.

I remember a story my wife told me about how her and her sister decided to wash her dad's new (at the time...) BMW 535 for his fathers day present.

They used ajax and scouring pads to get the tough stuff off of the paint ....

 

yup im guilty of using an 2 old tshirts, some cheap unknown car shampoo and turtle wax.
hell ive even used shoe polish on the wheels couple of times. all this was a long time back.
now i use detailedimage products

When I was in highschool, I used to use the entire turtle wax line. I use windex for cleaning the insides of windows, but never on the paint. I used to use 1 bucket and wash the whole car with that one bucket, including the wheels!

I never did the ajax and scouring pads though. Thats a quick way to get a black eye.

 

Before my G...I used the local car washes. I was happy when the first cloth car washes came in. I thought I was taking good car of my car when using them...haha.

 

When I was 16. I was TOLD by my brother to wash his maxima with Tide detergent, with a mix a BLEACH, using a tshirt.... now I know what the paint was so f-ed up.

oh and stotch pads for bugs and wheels.

 

I used to use ArmorAll stuff, then Megquiar, now Detail Image.

I used to wash my last car with a handful of rocks and red devil lye. Then I'd dry it with a welding torch. What I think really screwed it up, though, was when I started using turtle wax.

Seriously, I did use windex even though I probably knew better to get the dealer badging sticker off the back of my G. But I subsequently made my penance to the car with about $125 in Detailed Image products.

 

I'm not sure what I would have done if I saw my car after being washed with Ajax and scouring pads. I'd probably have to cry haha.

 

I was waxing my car and usually i go over the panel im doing with a big mf towel, and then with a smaller one to catch whatever i missed. My dad comes over says "you missed a spot" and proceeds to rub it with his fingernail, and then his nylon jacket, then his cotten shirt and says "its not comming out". The thing is was it did come out, now it was just a mess of scratchs that replaced it.
