How to tell when to reapply sealant

I applied sealant for the first time to my new g37 two weeks ago (I used OptiSeal). How can I tell when it is time to reapply? Is there any harm in applying sealant more frequently than is needed? And is there any problem in applying a different sealant (e.g., FMJ) over the OptSeal?
Thanks

Reapply every 4 months and you're good. Depending on your exposure you may only need to reapply every 6 months, but every 4 you should be good to go. Only 3 times a year.

Obviously if you use an abrasive polish, clay bar, or anything else that strips away your protection, you should reapply it.
