Etching is exactly what happens when you use wheel cleaner on warm or hot rims. I found that out on my 03 Coupe. Won't be using any on this one.

buy a gallon of meguiars wheel brightener, and cut it 4:1. Or try chemical guys citrus wheel cleaner (blue), but it is a bit milder than the megs wheel brightener.

Guy's polishing and cleaning can't put the paint back on... this is a known issue.. refinish is the only option.

If it's a black stain, then it's the primer underneath the paint.. there's a TSB on it. Refinish is the only option.

Dealer has a new 2008 5AT Journey Premium w/ premium 19" wheels ($650) that has the spots bad. The service manager says Nissan is giving him a hard time for replacement. It must be that Infiniti did a bad paint job at factory. My 18" have spots that I finally noticed a month after purchasing, and it feels like the coating is good, so the spots are from what happened before clear coating? But if it was somehow due to dealer wheel cleaning, (car manuf 10/07, purch 8/08, so sitting in lots for some time) Infiniti will probably not warranty and I would have a hard time sueing the dealer (however, I see my day after purchase photo shows this). I thought the wheels were bare metal and then clear coated, so I am surprised to find that they are actually painted, but now it makes sense how black spots could be there.

Try something called mineral spirit and see if it takes it off. It comes in a small jar and looks like cotton candy.

So are we saying that Chemical Guys Citrus Wheel and Rim is or is NOT safe for our wheels? It says it's safe for all factory finished wheels and that it uses citrus based enzymes instead of harsh acids. I've used it with great success so far, but now this has me worried.....

You guys arent getting it. The stains are not technically stains. Its whats underneath the silver of the rim. The cleaner burned the paint and now your able to see the undercoating. I used poorboys wheel cleaner that states is safe and it ruined all my rims. So when you guys recommend products to "remove" the stains your just starting from square one burning through the paint on the rim

Dealer to replace all 4 wheels that have spots

I will have to update the rating of my dealer, as they are going to replace all four of my 18" wheels due to numerous black spots, altho nowhere near as bad as the pics in this thread, but disturbing nonetheless. Therefore, this must be a factory problem that Nissan/Infiniti admits to. Not sure if the streaks shown in the pictures at the start of this forum are factory blame, and hard to believe that it would take any time to notice if they were there at the purchase, unless the purchase took place at night and the driver never left the vehicle?

I did not see any spots on the new 2009 cars on the lot, but the one 2008 G37 in the showroom with the 19" wheel option and the black spots was also manufactured in Oct,07 with a Vin close to mine. Were these 18/19 inch wheels new for the 2008 G37 coupe? Sad that the factory pushed these out the door...someone must have noticed the spotting. But Infiniti can make their money back by selling them on EBay to the Acura guys?
