Ester Oil

Got my 24k oil change at the Infiniti dealership and technician recommended that I use Ester Oil instead of regular oil. At $16.45 per litre (CDN$) it ain't cheap. More than double reg. oil price. I took a peak at it and it did look thicker than regular oil...

Ok - I'll cut to the chase... Anyone here use Ester Oil? Is it just a money grab or is it better?

A pretty extensive thread has been started on this subject here.

Thanks - I'll try to read through all 13 pages of it... wasn't sure if this ester oil was a cold Canadian climate thing or all across the board...

It's not a Canadian or climate thing, it's a Nissan VHR motor thing.

I'm using Nissan's ester because I had the VVEL ticking noise problem right after my last oil change, they reprogrammed the ECU and put ester in the car. They told me that's recommended the use of ester from now on and that's the only thing that will take care of the noise. Since it's a problem in the engine and not my fault and the recommended oil for the car is regular 5W30 I think it should be taking care under warranty and Nissan should pay for the difference in the oil price and not charge me the full amount for that expensive oil that we don't really need if the car had no problems. My next oil change is comming in next week and I'll try them to put regular synthetic and see if the noise comes back.
No noise since they updated and filled with ester.
I did notice my car runs at lower rpms now since the ECU update.
For what I've been reading your'e no better using ester that any other good oil out there.

After I had my $80+ Ester Oil change at TG Infiniti in Ottawa I was kind of scratching my head... since I didn't have a ticking noise and I'm at 24k... one would think a nearly $50k car wouldn't have these surprises....

I have been using regular synthetic since my last oil change over a couple of months ago, so far no noise, I'll continue using synthetic unless the noise comes back and the only cure is ester.

JRP - My next oil change is coming up soon - I'm currently at 29,000kms - not sure if I should stay the "$80 Ester" course or go back to half-price synth. Do you go to the dealership to change your oil or other?

Hey man!
Sorry I didn't reply earlier I wasn't checking the forums lately.
I'd go back to regular synthetic, that's what I did and so far no noise at all. I think any oil is good unless you abuse your car.
I'd buy the oil from a store, the dealer charges more, I went to 417 to do my oil change and asked them to use synthetic they agreed no problem, they told me they use Mobil-1.

Ya - I had no issues with synth either. I missed the 24k "maintenance 3" as per the Infiniti recommended maintenance schedule (I forgot and just got an oil change back in October). So tomorrow I'm going in for my missed Maint. 3 big check up @ TG (I'm currently at 29k) - need new wipers badly... Were you driving on St. Joseph Blvd. in Orleans - about a week ago? Saw white G - wasn't sure. How do you like this mild winter for Jan?

Don't mean to hijack the thread but on the topic of oil, how is the oil consumption on your cars? It's just out of curiosity. Even if there is no "issue", do you get any consumption at all?

Unless you are doing some hard cornering, the VQ37 shouldn't be consuming any oil at all.

I don't think mine consumes oil at all, an engine that new and regular oil changes it should stay ok.
Loki123, That wans't me on St Joseph, I haven't been in Orleans for at least a couple of months, I haven't see you around either. I did see a non-sport white a couple of weeks ago. Winter's been great! I hate when there's snow and slush on the ground.
