Trading in a car with aftermarket wheels

I will be trading in my G37S coupe that has a set of aftermarket wheels and snow tires (18") with no TPMS.

The OEM wheels (as you know) for the sport is 19" staggered.

Do you think this will greatly affect my trade-in value?

Yes, the more OEM the more value you will get.
its perception
..for it looks like it hasn't been messed with the better. if I see non-OEM rims, I also assume they messed with other things that will cause issues down the road.

I don't know that that is the best assumption. There are many people that change out wheels without doing anything else.

It's the dealership we're talking about, not a private sale. If it was a TPMS light and I was going to change the wheels anyway, it wouldn't take a nice car off the list.

I would think it will affect resale value. Looking at your sig, they're WedsSport wheels. Why not sell it and get OEM wheels put back on? You'll probably even make money on top.

Regardless dealer or private sale. TPMS light on would turn me away..regardless if I was changing wheels or not. Just another hassle of having to pay extra out of my pocket for TPMS.

The dealer cannot sell a vehicle with the TPMS light on.

Oh wait you are in Texas!

Perhaps they can if they violate federal law

Would a dealer source some OEM wheels to put on? or put in TPMS onto the wheels themselves?

Yes sir, on the dime of what they offer you for a trade-in. Most places will, behind the scenes of course, say: "OK, the car's worth $XX,XXX but we need wheels, tires and TPMS sensors to put it on the lot - let's take off $X,XXX to cover it and offer him that amount."

Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standards; TPMS; Controls and Displays. Final Rule.

TPMS Function and vehicle inspection.

Ok I stand corrected after doing a little more research.

However, if you were in a serious accident caused by a tire failure your insurance company might hold you at fault and leave you open to a civil suit.

Not a good idea to drive without them

I know my Infiniti dealer will not allow a vehicle to leave their shop with a TPMS light on because of liability

That's what I was thinking, hence not spending the extra cash on getting OEM wheels...On my last car, it had aftermarket wheels on it, but also had TPMS so the dealer didn't say anything and took the car without adjusting the price. I'll take off 700-800 for the sake of the hassle.

I bet you could find someone to trade for OEM wheel plus a little cash.

I agree that the more stock and pampered your car looks, the more you will get.

This is one of the reasons why I believe OEM accessories tend to cost more as well as they enhance the value of the car (minor, but viewed differently as compared to aftermarket).

I know I would be able to. I just don't want to because I want to keep my wheel for my next ride (at least for now). Plus I would have to wait for shipping back and forth, and there's a car that I want to jump on because I know it'll go quick.

I'll see what CarMax will give me then head over to the dealership. It will be up to the dealership if they want to beat Carmax's offer and deal with adding TPMS (which to me is minor). I know they'll sell it with aftermarket wheels on.

Out of curiosity, what is the car you are looking to jump on?
