Pre-Certified vs. Certified...huh??? Please help

I'm looking at an 08 with 37K on the dash. It is advertised as the following:

2-Way Power Driver's Lumbar Support, Bluetooth Hands-Free Phone System, CERTIFIED, Heated Front Door Mirrors, Heated Front Seats, Infiniti Navigation System, Memory System, Power Sliding Tinted Glass Sunroof w/Tilt, Power Tilt & Telescopic Steering Wheel, and Premium Package. This 2008 G37 is for Infiniti fans who are hunting for a premium car fully-loaded with amenities. You could be the second owner of this superb vehicle. It appears that this vehicle lived in a smoker-free environment. There appears to be no damage beyond normal wear on this vehicle. Consumer Guide Premium Midsize Car Best Buy. Infiniti Certified Pre-Owned means you not only get the reassurance of up to a 6yr/100,000 mile limited warranty, but also a 142-point inspection/reconditioning, 24/7 roadside assistance, trip-interruption services, rental car benefits, complimentary oil/filter change, and a complete CARFAX vehicle history report.

The sales manager informed me yesterday that its not actually "certified", but rather "pre-certified"; "...Infiniti wants to leave it to the customer to decide." I'd have to buy the extended warranty on my own. Is that really how it works? A dealership advertises like its certified and the warranty is present, but its actually not???

Thanks in advance.

Where is this being sold at? An Infiniti dealership? Because if its not, and it does not pass the inspection, Infiniti wont certify it. I work for a Chevy/Subaru dealer ship and we've had customers buy cars else where and bring them in to get certified and then they dont pass the inspection and cant be certified. Granted I belive you can fix what ever didnt pass but that can add up to alot of $$$. But then again, im not in service so I could be wrong, still I wouldnt trust a non Brand dealer selling a car "pre-certifed".

Essentially it seems like it was a ploy to get you in. Is it advertised as a certified vehicle? Or is is something they just told you before the final negotiations. Btw if it IS pre-certified then the cpo program is only 895 so I do believe they are blowing smoke up your ***

What I highlighted in red was a copy/paste from their website. I actually called the salesman today and told him that the Pre-Certified/Certified BS may be a deal breaker. If it was Pre-Certified then they should've advertised it as such (only four extra keystrokes). So, we'll see what comes back.

Yeah so what happens sometimes, what I have done in the past is if we are negotiating and it it getting down to very low to no profit, we through in we can do this price without certification (again is a 895 cost) so if they have done this then you can get it re-certified for 895, or use it as a negotiation tool. unfortunately seems like you have gotten one of the typical dealerships But it is stated that it is a certified car, so it needs to be

I agree. I told the guy, "While you all were playing with the numbers (and giving me a sweet deal), you never said, we are removing the certification status or warranty. Its a bit late to try and "explain" that to me now." Like I said, we'll see what happens. I want to the car and would hate to leave it behind...but my patience for "wheeling and dealing" only goes so far. Plus we are going into winter....

If its at an infiniti dealership, it should be certified if it can be. id be cautious about this place if its not. Why would they sell a car that "can be" instead of just certifing it.

it was certifed and they removed it to lower the price, a little bait and switch. Id say get your price you want with what you want, if not walk away as you will have issues with this dealer for any future dealings as well.

If it's certified, then it's certified. Removing it doesn't lower their cost, so it wouldn't lower your cost either. There's no reason to make a CPO not CPO unless they believe the warranty will cost them some money. I would simply tell them I'm no longer interested due to their sales tactics.

Well...its back to the drawing board. The original sales guys and I talked yesterday. We discussed a couple of things, most importantly the certification. He was supposed to get back with me this morning. Of course, he didn't. The sales manager calls me a little after 3pm and says, "What's his name wanted me to call you...some issue about the certification?" To spare you all of the details of the conversation, the synopsis was when he started playing with numbers he never said "I'm removing the certification". So, I expect it to have it. I'll cut straight to the end. He said, "Well, I have someone who wants to buy it at our other location, so if you don't want it..." To which my response was, "I don't want to do business with you and sell it to your other buyer."

Sometimes...I hate car shopping.

The "Certification" is just an extension of the warranty and enrollment into the CPO benefits program. Dunno what those benefits are but the car itself should be completely good to go, inspected, repaired...what have you. As for what you get for a warranty, whatever is left on the original unless you certify it.
