350Z owner considering G37x
Hi,
I am considering the G37x and this seems like the right place to learn more before I do.
I drive my 350z year-round 25,000 miles annually between RI and Boston (or my Subaru on any day that looks like snow) - agonizing over leaving the sports car behind, but this seems like a good solution.
I read a positive and comprehensive review at 2010 Infiniti G37 Reviews, Pictures and Prices - U.S. News Rankings and Reviews
Looks like there are a lot of options to select from, not sure which are nice vs need.
I'm trying to decide between the coupe and sedan, think I need the Premium package, think the white or liquid platinum are probably best for at least the appearance of cleanliness (I will never get a black car again after my 300GT VR4 experience in the 90s)
Planning a test drive this week, and past experience is that once I start the new car process I move quickly, and want to be sure I don't do anything impulsive or short-sighted before considering and asking the important stuff.
Looking for any advice, words of wisdom or caution, lessons learned, etc.
Thanks in advance!

All I can say is that the G37x is sick in the snow, it's been awesome in Toronto. Coming from a G35x in 2007, with Infiniti's system my mom has never been stuck, and has all-seasons all year round. Never been for a ride in a Z, but I used to have an Altima SE-R and my dad's friend took me for a rip in his S2K, so I sorta have an idea of what it's like. The G is much quieter inside... really need an exhaust to let it rumble like the SE-R. I sat in a Z one time, I can tell you that the materials in the G37 are much nicer, seats are more comfortable (a bit less supportive though, but not awful).
When we had the 07 G35x, we had no issues with it, it was bulletproof lol. Only thing was that the sunroof gears started grinding last summer, the whole sunroof was replaced under warranty, no questions asked. So far we've only has the 09 G37x coupe for just over a month, but no issues so far.
BTW I drive an 09 STI haha, Subaru represent (my mom has the G37x) !

Thanks for the feedback.
I have been getting 24 mpg at an average speed of 45 mph, 50 miles each way to work, with a 6-speed manual transmission. Would love some anecdotal info on fuel efficiency, from the real world users. Not overly concerned, but would like to have a realistic expectation.
Can anyone tell me what to expect in terms of routine maintenance? I get the oil changed every 7 weeks (3,500 miles).
I'm also wondering about the tire wear - I'm fairly aggressive for a "girl" driver, and need to add that $ to the budget. What have you experienced in terms of replacing/rotating?
The 60K warranty will last me a little over 2 years - any thoughts on the value/necessity of an extended warranty?
Thanks!

Sorry - one more question. I got the 3M clear protectant film when I bought the Z, (wish I had the entire car covered - very bad chips on the hood and roof)
Any thoughts, pro or con about the paint and whether the film would be a worthwhile addition again?

Since my family hasn't had the G long enough, I can't answer most of your questions about wear/tear and maintenance.
But in terms of paint I'd say to get the 3M clear protector again. I didn't get it on my SE-R and before I turned it back in the bumper had plenty of chips, looked pretty bad. The paint on Infiniti's seems to be slightly better, but definitely not the best. We had the clearbra on the 07 G35x and it helped keep the chips off, if we hadn't had it put on, it probably would have looked awful by the time we traded it in.

Although I really love the G37 coupe, you really should test drive the new 370z first. Although the G and Z come from a similar platform, they ride and drive very differently. I've driven the Z33 and Z34 back to back and the 2009/2010 is so much more fun to drive than the previous model. The interior has been vastly improved and the synchro rev match on the manual transmission is awesome. Yes, the interior of the G is more luxurious but it's also aimed at a different target audience. Then, there's the price. A 2010 370Z with sport package can be had for about $33k. Not so with the G coupe.

This is my second Infiniti and I've found the quality to be very good. That's not to say you won't have things that need fixing or maintenance, but in the end I think it ranks up there with the best of them. I tend to avoid the minor scheduled maintenance and try to get the major things done. Most of your minor scheduled intervals tend to involve mostly labor.
You can get the extended warranty up to 100k miles I believe, but sounds like that would be a little over 3 years for you. I tend to avoid the extended warranties since I usually don't keep cars for more than 4 years, but in your case it doesn't sound like it would be worth it since you'd only get another yr+ out of it.
Hope that helps!

Yes, if you care about the paint, get the film. Infiniti paint is similar to Nissan paint in that it chips easily. I just got 3M on my front bumpers, side mirrors, and hood.
Thanks very much! Appreciate the time and thoughts.
Wish I could stay with a Z car, but it's time to move on, and hope an AWD version is in the works for some future date.....
I drove a G37x sedan this week and was impressed, as well as being educated thanks to this great forum and all the past posts on every topic you can think of!
Visiting the dealership on Saturday to have a longer conversation - wish me luck!

funny that you're posting this, because i'm comparing the 370Z convertible with the G37 convertible.
have read good reviews of the Z.
the moderator put my original post in another area of this board if you want to look.
how's your experience with the Z?

Why change your oil so often if you drive highway? There are 2 schedules to follow...I always follow B which on the Infiniti is 7500 miles. If you worry find a synthetic place and use that. My BMW goes at least 15K on oil and I have a friend with a 911 that isn't scheduled to get one for longer. 3500 is old school thinking and oil.
I am curious what came out of your conversation when you went to the dealer. I had an 04 Z and moved to an 09 G. Very different... I had a lot of fun with my Z but needed to get a car with a back seat. The Z drove a lot different from the Z in my opinion. The Z had more torque and you felt more connected to the road. The G is a great car but seems more numb than the Z. That being said it is much more quiet than my Z was and the ride is definitely softer.
