Detailed Guide to Importing Cars from the US

For those of us in Canada who are looking to save some major bucks and get the G37 imported, I came across the following link that describes how to get a car imported from the States.

The next obvious question.. Any dealers in the States want to sell to Canadians?

US MSRP and Invoice pricing here: http://www.edmunds.com/tmv/new/2008/...g37/index.html

Updated information
Found a great link: http://www.importcartocanada.info/

LOTS of great information.

With our strong Canadian dollar, this is a very good option indeed this time around and something I will look into. Thanks for the link, I will read it later.

As for your question, I don't see why any dealership would refuse your business. Money is money afterall.

At the very least, I will use this to try and cut a deal with the dealership here in Canada.

BMW USA and Toyota USA (and possibly others) have told their dealers not to sell to Canadians on threat of losing their franchise license. They do this - rather than adjust the prices in Canada to bring them in line with US prices - to 'protect' their Canadian dealerships. BMW even goes so far as to charge $500 for the 'Recall Clearance Letter' that you need from the manufacturer in order to complete the importation process. This is a letter that every other manufacturer gives for free. I guess they figure that putting these roadblocks up is going to make potential buyers flock to the Canadian dealerships and happily pay $15,000 more for a car. Well, it doesn't work that way. People will find another manufacturer that actually wants their business. That brings us to the subject at hand. I was down in Seattle on the Labour day weekend and found a dealer in Tacoma who said they were only too happy to sell to Canadians. So, at least for now it seems that Infiniti is not putting up roadblocks to Canadian buyers at US dealerships. The only downside to Infiniti is that (astoundingly) there is no way of turning on Daytime Running Lights that are required here either in car settings or via dealer computer. You have to find somebody who can actually wire the foglights to the ignition switch.

Yeah theres only 2 infiniti's relatively close to vancouver, both I found have no issues dealing with canadian customers (and are accustomed to it).
The main hurdle right now in terms of importing the G37 is that the RIV has yet to approve the 2008 nissan/infiniti's -- until the green light shows we 'nucks are somewhat out of luck. I believe its just a matter of waiting tho.

Uhmm... Just heard yesterday in the news that a few manufacturers has instructed its US dealerships not to sell to Canadian, one of them being Nissan. Can't confirm this though.

I haven't heard that, but I warn you that you have to take media reports with a large grain of salt. They know what side their bread is buttered on.

I certainly hope that the report was wrong.

I've actually heard that as well. But part of that is what you already touched on faston which is that the dealer would be hit with a stiff penalty or worse like Toyota and BMW.

It's quite absurd, with the dollar being almost on par with the USD and having been strong for a while now, I don't see how they can still justify gouging Canadians so badly. I know it was said earlier when the dollar began strengthening that they would not change car prices, because back when the Canadian dollar was very weak they lost money then and this is just recouping that loss. You'll remember it wasn't more then a decade or two ago that the exact opposite was happening and Canadian cars were being imported into the states in droves and it was the Canadian dealerships facing fines and penalties if they dealt with americans.

It's not like they need to match US prices exactly, they just need to lower car prices to the point that it no longer appears beneficial to import from the states. If they priced even $5000 over US prices I think that would have a significant impact, as most people won't go through the hassle just to save a couple of grand after import (that could arguably be attained through the negotiation process here).

Really the disparity is exaggerated with the more expensive cars. I believe that's why you don't see people going crazy importing Civic's, Accord's, Altima's etc by the dozen. The price differential is much less after you factor in the time and money involved with importing. With the G37, you're looking at a ~$14K difference! with something like a Porsche Cayman you're looking at ~$30K! that to me is just insane and a pretty blatant rip off.

Hi Camatose,
I have a 03 G35, and am looking at Kirkland Infinity for a G37.
I will be checking with RIV, and if you find out before me they have approved the 2008, either of us should post, to let the other know.

I called Infinity Canada, and Infinity USA.
There is no issue purchasing a USA vehicle, and having warranty valid in Canada, or the other way around.
I was told if the Infinity Dealer even mentioned they didn't, or couldn't offer warranty on a USA purchased vehicle, have them call Infinity Canada immediatly, as they CANNOT refuse warranty.
Also, if that Dealer tried to turned you away, tell that dealer you were told by Infinity Canada, if they did that you were to REPORT that dealer's actions to Infinity Canada.

Sounds good to me I've already placed my order, with an ETA of end of october. Believe it or not, I had an original order that arrived end of Aug, but because it wasn't authorized by RIV I had to let go of that order I can only cross my fingers that it'll be approved by then...

Alternatively, if you're able to get a letter of approval faxed by Nissan/Infinity Canada (that essentially states that the vehicle can be modified to comply with Cdn motor vehicle safety standards), that would work as well.. but I've had no luck in getting that.

I don't think I would count on getting a letter from Infinity Canada, they will protect the dealers.
I was at richmond Infinity today, they want like 30K difference mine a 03 G35 with 40k on it mint sport model.
Crazy prices.
They have an 04 on the lot asking 34K for it.
I may just wait a bit.
How much do you think I will get for my 03 in the paper????
No decks, Saragetti Sand, biege interior, auto.

I posted this in another thread, as it really belongs here, but on Thursday I received a phone call from the RIV stating that the G37 has been approved for import to Canada, and should be showing up on the list within the week. I'm getting a 6MT Platinum Graphite with Prem/Tech/Nav and driving it up from Arizona (I have friends in LA and SFO that I've been meaning to visit). I'm planning on picking it up on Friday.

On a side note, Infiniti Canada wouldn't be the ones providing the letter, it would be the American Infiniti corporation, as it's their vehicle. The people who would be able to sign off on that would be the compliance technical team, and they don't have a number that you can really get ahold of them with, as a member of the general public. Infiniti on the whole though, doesn't seem to really penalize their dealers in the same fashion as Honda and Toyota do.

Ok I swear, everytime time I call RIV I get someone different, and that someone usually has something else to tell me
The lady I just spoke with on the phone told me that because the list has yet to be officially updated with the 2008 Infiniti's, it it still deemed inadmissible. According to her and a senior rep working next to her, they are unaware of any updates from nissan/infiniti, and that perhaps her supervisor knows more but unless it is on the list she cannot advise anyone to import it.

I have read on other RFD threads where someone was able to call in and get approval on a vehicle that has yet to be added to the list (simply due to the fact that the list was pending updates).. lets just hope that this is the case w/ the G37!!
