I finally bought new wheels. Problem is the tire shop want to tell me I can't mount my existing 245s on 9.5" wide wheels. They are basically refusing to do it. I'm pretty sure a number of people on here have done this. Can anyone confirm this will not be a major safety concern? My car will only be used as a daily driver with occasional spirited driving. Thanks in advance.
Depending on the brand of tire, it's not really a stretch. Places like Discount Tire will avoid doing anything that will be a liability against them in case of a failure. You could do one of two things
1) Lie about the width of the wheel and have them mount it at different Discount Tire location. They probably won't take the time to measure the wheel width.
2) Find a different tire shop that is not corporate owned.
I have 245's on a 10.5 and the tire shop didn't blink an eye when I asked them to mount it.
Thanks for the reply MaQ. It's not Discount Tire but it is a national chain. They discovered the sizes after I dropped the car off. After discussing further with the tech he agreed to mount them but is going to mark the ticket that I assume full responsibility. The tire specs show the tread to be 9.6" wide. They just had me second guessing myself and the research I put in before purchasing.
Do you have any issues or concerns running the 245 on your 10.5" wheel? How long have you had them and how are they holding up?
You'll have no issue running 245s on a 9.5, that's what I've been running for the last year. Next time find an independent shop, they typically do a better job and aren't as likely to use an impact driver even after you tell them specifically not to (ask me how I know).

I've had them on for about a couple of weeks, I have no issues. This is quite a stretch and I only do this to achieve the tucked fitment when I air out my suspension. This is more of the "stance" look.
I ran a 225/40 on a 9.5 before for a year, never had an issue with that either. Like what Brad said, you will be fine with the 245's.
Thanks guys for the feedback! The side walls don't look stretched at all to me and the tire specs state 9.6" tread width. I'll just have to be extremely careful around curbs as the wheel sits out further than the tire now.
Here's a couple pix. I'll get more posted later in the wheel thread once I get a chance to clean em up. Thanks again guys I really appreciate the help!
As far as curbs, just avoid them like the plague, I've even got my wife going out of her way to avoid them. That perfect parking spot next to a curb that used to look awesome, now looks like death
245s are perfectly safe on a 9.5 wheel. Heck, 245s are safe on a 8.5 wheel. You can go as wide as 285s although 275s are a near perfect match. That shop doesn't know what they're talking about. Just grab the tires and get them mounted elsewhere
