Gauging interest in Penske shocks

While doing a little research earlier this week on suspension, I happened on this page and they mentioned Penske shocks: Autocross to Win (DGs Autocross Secrets) - Buying Shocks

I went to Penske's website to see if there were any applications for our cars listed and there wasn't so I emailed to see if there was anything in development. For those that don't know, Penske is the last word when it comes to shocks, with quality that is second to none. For details, see here: The Penske Advantage

Penske was very responsive and said they do the GT-R and had actually done a few custom 370Z jobs (with no chassis modification required) but it's not an off-the-shelf application. They may look to develop this if there is some interest, but with engineering and development, it all depends on how much interest there is to determine whether design resources can and would be allocated. Jim suggested I contact Stillen to see if they would be interested in helping to develop this. I have had a busy week and have not had a chance to contact Stillen, but received an email from Kyle that they are interested in developing a coil over for the 370Z/G37 platform.

I realize we're a forum of enthusiasts and that cost is a subjective statement for many. Here's what Kyle asked:

As Jim had eluded to we do work with Penske directly on some applications including the Nissan GT R and the Ford GT supercar. We have discussed in the past that we would like to work on a coil over set up for the Nissan 370Z, Infiniti G37 Z34 platform. Our biggest concern is cost. What do you think the market could bare for such a high performance shock? Keep in mind these shocks are second to none. We do also work with KW, Eibach, and other suspension companies for this application. There really isn’t anyone better than Penske when it comes to high performance shock absorbers. However, that quality and high level of performance also means they can be considered expensive.

What would you guys be willing to pay? I have no idea what the ballpark cost would be, but the idea of another application for our cars and development of the aftermarket for the platform is intriguing.

I have spent (in other people's opinions) a crazy amount on dampers on my previous car (2004 STi). They were made by Ohlins and were around $2k brand new, and were adjustable.

I would be interested in this, but am sure there is not enough interest (especially since I have an AWD sedan and its not interchangable with Z34 and RWD V36) but could see spending up to $1500 for a good setup that would match the Swift springs that I already installed on my car.

Guess we will see what kind of response we get here, although it is not looking good so far...

Ohlins would be an awesome option too. Penske is great and if they've done Z applications they'll definately work on the G. That said though what are you doing with your G that Konis can't handle?

I've read that article before they also love bilsteins and konis.

Koni yellows are readily available for under 1k and bilstein makes coilovers for our application. (Actually even the KW V3s use bilstein dampers too)

Don't get me wrong more options would be awesome but I just don't think there'd be enough of a market. They're better off making something geared for the Z crowd and they'd work for us too.

Yeah, I haven't seen a lot of interest either unfortunately. Definitely a great article although it gets deep enough to make my head spin at times. I saw that they were digging on the Bilsteins and Konis. I'd love to be able to test all of them back to back, much like Michelin did with the new Pilot Sport A/S 3 tire. That would be pretty cool.

I'm not doing anything particularly intense with my G, just a DD for me, but have to confess that I have a little obsession with getting the best quality possible.

I wound up ordering a set of Koni Yellow's because my stockers are done and imminently in need of replacement. I'm leaving the stock springs on so it should be interesting to see how the ride changes from deteriorated stock condition. But anything would be an improvement over the schizophrenic feel of the suspension over bumpy roads. It's especially problematic in the rear so I'm looking to solve that issue.

I agree Jethro, I'd love to see it as an option for our platform but I don't think there will be enough interest to make it feasible, unless it's co-developed with the Z.
