question on coilovers

Im in the market for a set of coilovers as I am very unhappy with my tein s-tech springs on my G37S. Ive been looking at a couple sets, tanabe, megan, ksport, bc , now my question is on the tanabes the rear shock is just a regular shock and is not threaded however with the others the rear shock is threaded along with the spring perch that the spring sits in. What function does the threads to adjust the rear shock serve?

For raising and lowering you usually have to adjust the shock height in conjunction with the spring perch height.

The ones without separate height adjustment will hit a point where if you want to go lower, you have to preload your spring by compressing it with the height adjustment perch. The ones that have separate adjustment you can lower independently of the spring.

Oki im only talking about the rear spring and shock set up where the spring has a piece that is hight adjustable and the shock also has threads. i think what your talking about pertains to the front where the bottom of the spring sits on one collar and the hight adjustment is a completely diff collar. thank you for the input on the spring preload though

Preload is typically used to adjust ride height and to prevent the suspension from bottoming (or topping) out.

well i dont think im explaining myself very well. I am only talking about the spring and shock in the rear of our cars. for our coilovers the spring is seperate from the shock what i want to know is why is there a threaded section on the shock if there is no spring that the threads are adjusting.

Ah I understand what youre talking about now. I'm actually looking for coilovers right now that replace the OEM set up with a true coilover (shock and spring as 1 unit). I'm not sure why the rear would still be threaded, it wouldnt serve any purpose. Maybe manufactures use the same strut housing on both set ups because its cheaper to manufacture one design instead of two. I dont know.

Kidcane is right, in addition:

Proper adjustment for the shocks come after setting your height. Once you have measured and verified height is set properly via the rear spring perch adjustment you will need to set the proper preload on the coils while adjusting the shocks. This is to improve your right by adjusting the shock preload in conjunction with spring perch height.
