Time for new brakes, question first.

I recently went to have my brakes done at a brake specialty place and they did not have the pads. So they gave me an estimate but recommended that I replace the rotors too, even though he said they are in spec and can be turned. Should I replace them or turn them? I'm probably going to put Hawk Performance Ceramics on in case that help.

What are the pros and cons? If I should replace them, can someone recceomend a basic OEM type rotor. Thanks!

Btw, it's a 2008 G37S

If they can be turned I'd try that first. No point in wasting money on new rotors if you don't need them. How many miles do you have on them?

If you do want new rotors I've got the stoptechs and they are great. I abuse the crap out of them on the track and they hold up just fine. As far as pads the hawk ceramics suck IMO. I had these on and didn't like them at all. The bite was terrible when they are cold and only bite really well once they get fairly hot, which under street driving won't happen very often. They were really noisy too. The only nice thing about them was the low brake dust.

I finally took them off after I burned them up at the last track day. I put the oems back on for now and they are a lot better as far as street driving goes.

I'm not stuck on the Hawks, I only drive on the street but would lie something low noise and low dust if possible. Any recommendations?

Personally I think the oem pads work really well. The hawks are the only other ones I've used so far though. I'll probably start trying out some different pads next spring when I start going to the track again but for now I'm just gonna stick with the stock ones.

I have Hawk ceramics and absolutely love them. They're not a track pad so you shouldn't expect that of them. For daily driving they are perfect. Very low dust and absolutely no noise whatsoever in thousands of miles. If you want street pads they fit what you want perfectly.

But I do agree with wake in that you should turn the rotors instead of buying new ones. The brake place you took it too can easily tell you if they can be turned and most of the reputable include it in the price of a brake job. Turning them will cost only about $17.50 each at most auto parts stores. I haven't priced new OEM rotors but I'll bet they're at least a couple hundred bucks each.

Hawk ceramics, turn them instead of replacing them.

+1 on BB's suggestion.

Here is the minimum thichness for the rotors.

Front disc

30.0 mm (1.181")

Rear disc
15.0 mm (0.591")

If they can machine them, and keep them above those specs, then you're good to go.

I just purchased Hawk ceramic pads, good pads, mean bite at first but then it eases up after a while, brake dust so far is better compared to the stock pads, def worth the money.

I have to change out my rear rotors after 40,000 km. They were warped.

I just got sick of the dealership replacing/turning my rotors with every service and the brake judder is killing me, so I pulled the trigger on some Stoptech Slotted Rotors and Street Pads, I'll have a detailed review of that when they go on.

I agree I have the Hawk Ceramics and really love them. And definitely turn the rotors if they're still thick enough. And make sure to properly burn in the ceramics as per the instructions that come with them so they mate with the newly turned rotors.

The original OEM R Spec on both G37 Journey with Sports Package and S's. Are made with Carbon + Metallic = at high temperature forms carbide. Carbide as we know are fashioned to make metal cutting tools. So imagine what R Spec OEM brake pads do to your rotor when you take your G's to the track. Yes OEM gives greater stopping power. However for everyday, hassle free use. Ceramic pads are better choice.
