what to do with car while friend powder coats the only wheels i have
Friend is powder coating my wheels for free but only wants the wheels. What the hell do i do. I was told maybe jacking the car up with jack stands in my garage, but I don't know how safe that is. any advice? are jack stands reliable? Many body shops don't want to hold the car on a bed for days unless forking mad dough.
um ... yes jack stands are reliable. as long as u do it right, our "factory jack point" is made for the factory jack, so there's another thread on how to solve this problem for regular jackstands.
When i put the car up on 4 stands, i usually do one side at a time. Just jack it up from the middle and put the 2 stands under. Then go to the other side and repeat. This way the car isnt pivoting on one front and one rear jack stand.

As the car is quite heavy, I would place a piece of steel sheeting under the jack stand to distribute the weight; particularly if it is on asphalt. I've seen cars slowly sink in asphalt and leave big marks on the driveway.
I've taken the metal cover off the drain in the garage and placed it under the jackstand before and have a couple of other similar steel pieces for this purpose (about 10 inches square). Four good jackstands should hold the car without issue as most are rated at 2 ton or up to 3 1/2 tons - more than enough.
