Rear Shock Tower

Does anyone know where the rear (shock tower or strut tower?) can be located? Does it come out into the trunk behind the trunk liners?

I am debating on if I should add a dampener extension when I install coilovers or not. From my research, it seems like drilling is a must. However, what is not clear to me is am I suppose to drill a nonexisting hole into existence? Or is there a hole already present and I just need to increase the bore size for the hole?

Does anyone have a picture of it?

Can anyone chime in on this?

They're in the cabin as far as I could tell. I pulled out the trunk lining and it appears they're in a really tight space on the rear shelf outboard of the speakers. NOT easy to get to and more work than I wanted.

Luckily, my dampers came with a side adjustment ****. Yeah, I have to jack up the rear but I have a low profile speed jack and it takes me all of ten seconds to slide it under the diff and jack the car up.

I ripped out my entire trunk looking then realized theyre in the cabin as mentioned. Quickly gave up and dropped the shock to adjust damping. Went to my alignment shop to see the damage and all was in spec. Because the shock is support and attatched to the arm with no alignment adjustments itself, it kept I guess.

ok, in terms of dropping shocks.

What size bolt socket do I need and what length bolt socket extender (not sure the correct name) do I need to get into that tight space for the two bolts?

Lastly, where can I find the bolt size FSM. I found the torque spec but not the bolt size in FSM.

Thanks!

Top two are 12mm with 12in extension.

Bottom is 17mm socket and 17mm box wrench.

So let me make sure my understanding is correct. If I just want to adjust the dampener, I should just undo the two 12mm bolt and then lower it enough to reach the dampener **** right? No need to undo the 17mm on the bottom right?

Also, I heard some people actually breaking off those bolts studs when unbolting or bolting up the shocks. How likely are these events, rarely?

Lastly, does any one have a picture of the shock tower from inside the cabin in a G coupe?

Wrong.
The shock if in good condition you wont be able to do that. Definitely unbolt the 17mm.

Takes a second.

As far as the upper bolt stripping or snapping. Use correct tq spec

It all depends on where the adjuster is on the shock. On Konis, it's at the top of the rear shocks, on the side of the actual cylinder. So to reach it, you can just jack the rear of the car to create enough space to get your arm up in the wheelwell, and then make the adjustment. Other coilovers have the adjuster at the base of the rear shock, where you wouldn't need to jack the car, just reach under and turn a ****. So it would depend on which coilovers you're looking at getting.

The rear shock "tower" is accessed by removing the rear seat back.

Some dampers have adjusters on the top of the damping rod, the makers sometimes offer extension cables for remote adjustment. MeisterR is this way. I think you have to drill a hole directly above the damper rod but that's it. You merely lay the extenders against the rear structure and trap them in place when reinstalling the seat back. You can easily reach them behind the rear headrests.
