Options:
(1) Remanufactured rack $300-500 + install
2009 INFINITI G37 3.7L V6 Rack and Pinion Complete Unit | RockAuto

(2) Used rack from eBay $200-500 + Install

(3) Dealer $2600

Best bet: Used rack installed at independent shop.

Also consider another option: get the rack reinspected by an second ASE tech and get a second opinion. You didn't mention any other symptoms with the steering, and if this was just a regular inspection, then you may be getting a "worse case" scenario. Infiniti steering racks don't usually have problems unless they've been abused or neglected.

Ya i went in for inspection today to get a clean bill of health so i could purchase the extended elite warranty. Thats when they told me about the steering rack, i have not had any issues with the steering.

Thanks Sonic for the suggestions

I'm having the same issue as you are. I'm getting a second opinion tomorrow by an independent shop. What they told me over the phone is that it might not be the pinions but one of the hoses. If that's the case you don't need to replace the whole power steering rack. Rockauto seems to have the best prices if you end up needing the whole unit.

seems odd that the steering rack would be going out with low mileage

Well, apparently dealership was lying to me. I got my steering rack inspected and it's not leaking. I'll be monitoring my power steering fluid level closely just in case.

Came in here hoping it was a "can a S steering rack be installed on a xS?" question. Anyone know the answer?

Did they document the specifics of the leak on the inspection form? Were you able to buy the extended warranty?

Maybe were trying to double dip. Have you pay for the phantom repair, then charge infiniti for it.

About 3 months ago my entire rack and pinion for my power steering went out on me. Both sides were leaking horribly and the dealership estimated me at $2,600 as well for everything, given it was a new part that they were charging for but still $2600!?!? I also have a 2010 g37xs coupe. I went online and found a refurbished used one for $500 and a local shop owner charged me $200 for labor. So if you ask me I saved a heck of a lot of money. Best of luck with everything man.

Contact this woman... she'll ask for your year make model and will find you one within minutes, with crazy cheap shipping costs. But most importantly they give guaranteed warranties on all of their parts. It's incredibly tough to find a rack and pinion for an awd with a guaruntee that its in good working condition, as they are different and less common for our cars than the rwd model. Trust me this is the place to get what you're looking for at the best price for sure. I did my fair share of research and they were the best an extremely helpful and answered all of my questions with professionalism.

On the form they just circled leak next to power steering, so i would have to get that fixed before they would give me a clean bill of health. No i wasnt able to buy the extended warranty and wont be able now, im at 69700mi and the cutoff is 70K. Dont have enough time to fix that and still get the warranty, I havent see any symptoms of a leak so idk.

Main reason for extending the warranty was because of the gasket issue that seems to be popping up more now as peoples mileage is increasing.

Ya freaking crazy he quoted me that, I damn near jumped out my seat at the dealer when he told me the price to fix it.
