Hawk HP+ grind
Hawk HP+ grind
I posted this in another thread, but I'm not sure it was the right one.
I put these pads on (Hawk Performance HP Plus Brake Pads - Axle Set (HB601N.626)) and I bedded them in per Hawk's instructions. Everything was fine for about 50 miles or so then I started to hear some squeal at first on the passenger side then the driver side shortly after. I did grease the pads with the supplied brake grease. That is my first issue.
A new one today arose and sort of bothered me was I started to hear a grind. It was very distinct and different from the squeal i was hearing. I looked at the rotors and there are two distinct lines about 1/4 inch apart where it looks like some grind is happening. I didn't have the rotors resurfaced (factory ones) because the original pads weren't worn down to the point of replacement. I just wanted to swap and give these a try.
But the squeal and grind have got to go. I can take them out and re-grease them and see if that will fix the squeal, but I am concerned about the grind.

Be sure to apply grease to the pad surface directly. Thoroughly cover it so there is no possibility of noises.
Actually no, don't do that. Unless you want to die... then go ahead.
To answer the question though, if you say there are 2 lines on the rotor then obviously you already found the problem. Something must be stuck in there between the rotor and pad.

If it were something that got in between it would seem that a few hard brakes would rid it. Especially since it wasn't that way from the start...
Yeah the anti sequel stuff that came with it.. To be honest I didn't think there was enough in the package.. So regardless I guess I'll take em off and re apply some "anti-squeal" stuff and inspect them for debris

So I got off work, it's about 50 degrees and the car has been in the shade the whole day. I fully excpected to squeal the entire way to the shop... Nothing.. No grinding and no squealing ... I have no idea what's going on here.. My pads are possessed

In all seriousness though there are a bunch of things that could be going on here that could cause squeaking and grinding. You are probably going to get quite a bit of that as well as dust because that is an autocross/light track duty pad you are using on the street. It is also semi metallic so expect it to squeak- often, especially when the pads are cold. And again, expect lots of dust.
Well I knew I would get some squeal and more brake dust, but it's so inconsistent (squeal) that I don't understand. It happens randomly sometimes when I first pull out... Then it won't happen again for a while then after driving for about 30 min without Andy squeal it starts again.
I don't know if I'm gonna be able to take this for the life of the pads.. What I'm prolly going to do is order the ceramic ones and throw these up on the marketplace for a discount considering they have about 150 or so miles on them

^Good catch! I was curious and went to the Hawk site to learn more:

To the OP: Do you autocross?

Ok so I took the pads off to see what the problem was... The corners were damaged on the passenger side pads. I must of missed it when I was installing them. So I contacted Amazon and returned them... I also decided to step down to the street pads.. Nearly the same bite without the crazy amount of dust! Had to replace the rotor ... Well I guess I could of just turned it, but went ahead and replaced em. After bedding them in good I have 0 noise.
@sonicvq ... Working my way into autocross...but the hp plus pads were definatly to much for a dd.

^ Next go around.. give a strong look to the the HPS 5.0 pads from Hawk.. They resolve dusting, noise, endurance complaints had from all their others lines (mainly previous HPS+ iterations) and just about every category pads are measured in can be considered good to great with them (5.0 pads). Rather than what's found in their other lines, track focused options and even street oriented pads where Hawk seemed to focus on doing one or two things extremely well while sacrificing other factors in the name of those two extremely well done factors.
