Pillowball mounts
Pillowball mounts
Who has coilovers with pillowball mounts? Which coilover? How is the noise/vibration compared to regular rubber mounts? Do you regret getting them or wish you had regular rubber mounts?
Thanks.
Thanks.
I'm running HSD HR Coil-overs, 13kg F 11kg R spring rates. Which I think are perfect on the Sedan, and still quite mild vs full out track cars.
I've got a 07 G35S Sedan, the suspension was already quite firm. Some of the firmest in the V36 line up from personal experience.
Going to pillowball mounts made a neglible difference in noise and vibration.
I actually like them because it allows for easy height adjustable by spinning the actual shock body vs by the spring, which messes up pre-tension and makes it much easier to corner weight/balance the car.
Harsher ride? %100 given
Extra noise? no, as long as the coils are pretension-ed properly.
Your biggest concern shouldn't be the Pillowball mounts, the critical thing with a coil-over will be a quality spring, and a dampener that is valved for the rates you are running.
A dampener/spring combo where you have poor or unmatched valving, a spring that has not been quality control tested, and coil-overs which have not been corner weighted/balanced properly will give you the highest amount of ride quality degradation.
I cannot stress this enough to people with coil-overs, you get what you pay for, and if you're going to install them, get yourself a real alignment and someone with knowledge to set them up.

Thanks for your insight dimsler. I'm looking for just comparison of the pillowball vs non pillowball mounts. Your experience was no extra noise vs rubber mount but harsher ride. It's impossible to quantify something like that objectively, but as best you can would you say negligible, a little, moderately, or a lot harsher ride due to the mounts alone?

My personal experience is that there is negligible difference between pillow ball mounts and rubber mounts.
I was referring to harshness / ride quality degradation by switching from OEM suspension to coil-overs.
Pillow ***** are used in cars that have McPherson strut suspensions where the damper is part of the steering system.
I've lost more ride quality going with a 19" rim and a shorter side wall, than using pillow ball mounts.

I think it's down to KWv3 or Cusco Zero 2E. The Cuscos for our application can be had with regular mounts or pillowball mounts, hence why I was asking if anyone had direct back to back comparison of the two types of mounts. I've already done plenty to my suspension to make it stiff and less comfortable so I just don't want to opt for the pillowball mounts and end up with something unlivable that I won't be happy with.
I just Installed my aragosta coils so i now have my kw v3's with roughly 6k miles on them sitting around. Let me know if u want them black betty. I came from the tanabes to kw and i loved the difference. Kws were much much smoother. I had them set at 9 clicks f/r and it felt a little stiffer than stock but smoother

I will pm you back then black betty when i get to my computer at 3:30 am at my office. I am on my ipad and when i go to respond to a pm, i can get about ten words typed and safari will shut down like like clockwork. Idk why.
I am extremly pleased tho. I am going to do a review when i stiffen things up and raise it up a tinsy bit. Im not sure they are worth the premium over the kws as they feel exactly alike to me, but im so tired of switch coilovers out of my car im finally done haha. Im hoping they will last for many years as they seem very well built and have an amazing rep for that.
