Engine braking
Sorry for the confusion, I in NO way meant to brake using the engine. I was more referring to decelerating as described in rev-match down-shifting. Thanks for all the info, based on the replies I thinks its fair to say it does add a bit more wear on the clutch disk but no damage to the engine. Please feel free to correct me.

I do this a lot when coming to stop lights or exiting the interstate. It's fun to do and saves your brake pads. Pretty normal driving when you own a manual I think.
Funny I have been doing this for years.. Now my G is auto and still do it.. but then again I drive in M mode all the time..

I rev-match downshift about half the time. Sometimes I get lazy and just put it in neutral. I was taught to downshift and I still believe that you can't go wrong as long as you're matching the right RPM's. The tricky part is learning where that point is on the tach. This car being relatively new to me, I'm still learning where that point is.
