Akebono kit vs upgrading g37x kit

I have a g37x, with just the standard brakes. I know a BBK (like stoptech ect) is the best, but im willing to shell out 4-6k for a full kit.

So my two options are to upgrade to the akebono kit (same as on the g37s) for
~$1200 (w/o ss lines)

My other option is to keep the stock calipers and upgrade rotors, pads and lines ~$650

im curious of how much of an upgrade the new rotors ect would be to the stock g37x brakes.

i have a G37x sedan and i wll be doing the akebono conversion. larger rotors, more pad area. that is how kinetic energy is transformed into heat and then cooled. there's no real substitute. i think the akebono's are about as good as anyone is going to find, all else being equal. the stopping power comes from the friction material in the pads and the tires. everything else pretty much deal with heat absorption and heat dissipation. this is an inexpensive way to get excellent repeatability to stops (that's the heat absorption / cooling part) and your choice in tires and pads will take care of the stopping distance. anything else is complete balderdash.

Are you really unhappy with the performance of your current brakes? Or do you just want the look of big brakes? Upgrading the pads, lines, and rotors of the current set-up will definitely render an improvement in the stopping power that will not be too far behind the performance of the factory sport big brake kit. However, if you want the look of the big brake kit, buy the Akebono's. (Something to keep in mind is that there will always be a demand for them on this forum if you decide to sell them at some point.)

Just my $.02...

For me I think its more an issue of looks than braking power, but the extra braking power is nice.

Stock brakes are fine, heck Ive had stock brakes on every vehicle Ive owned (minus when I needed to replace rotors and pads).

The Akebonos look nice though If I ever get to the point where I need to replace rotors on my car Id seriously think about the Akebono kit. I just havent been able to find out if they fit behind the wheels that came on my car (2011 limited edition sedan.......they are different wheels than anything else Ive seen specs on)

well of course who doesnt like the look of a BBK? they looks awesome. But im not prepared to spend ~$600 for a bit of a better look. I do feel as if the stock brakes are very lacking, and am afraid in an emergency situation will not be good enough. If the upgraded rotors, pads and lines will give me a significant improvement over stock i would perfer to keep the 600 bucks and put it towards and exhaust

1.New rotors especially Slotted rotors will keep moisture, dirt, and keep your pads on clean surface compared to OEM Akebono Rotors. On rainy, snowy, cold areas I assume you are running your G AWD.
2.Stainless steel compared to OEM will last longer without stretching. Give you more knock back pressure, which transfer hydraulic pressure better.
3.Brake pads are included
4.When Akebonos and Brembo go OEM. They not only have to match the car makers specifications. But their price bidding as well. So may reduce costs which equals to less expensive parts and material.
5.Since StopTech are from Brake Lines on made from same company. The replacement parts are readily available. And to go Stainless, Slotted Rotors after Akebonos may bring lot of issues getting right parts.
6.Looks StopTech looks much better than Akebonos. Unless you paint them RED.

Hey guys,
Sorry to dig up the old thread. I just returned from a deployment and looking to convert my 2009 G37x coupe brakes to the Akebono's. It has the 18" wheels, will it sufficiently clear the spokes if I decide to do the upgrades? From what I have read, COZ's product seems to the best and to go with stainless steel brake lines! Any suggestions are appreciated. Thanks guys.

(So ready to drive again after being on the ocean for 8 months!)

just do the akebono upgrade and you'll be set. no need to go aftermarket unless you're looking to track the car.

So, I don't need spacers or anything? Is the spoke clearance enough. How long did it take you? A day?

I have a question.... I have a 2012 g37xs sedan and I want to upgrade the brakes.... What all do I need in order to upgrade.... And do I need a specific type of caliper (like 4 fronts or 4 rears) or could I just buy a set off soemone on this site that has them on a coupe before.
