Headlight paint fail; water leaked in and killed my ballast

About a month ago I took both headlight units out, took them apart and painted the housings black. When I reassembled everything I failed to heat the units in the oven to soften the glue and instead just applied 3M weather stripping and called it. Fate was sealed and last night the pass. headlight quit working after a rainstorm.

I tested the bulb and it's fine so I am going to pick up a used ballast/igniter/bulb on eBay then test it upon arrival and once I know what's wrong I will take both headlights apart and fix the leak.

Any advice on reassembly so I don't suffer this same fate again? Obviously they'll go in the oven to soften the glue but is there a best method so the two 'halves' go back together correctly? I will say even though I have to take them apart again, this mod and the STI lenses are worth the trouble. Makes the car looks much more aggressive.

Try to remove all the original sealant and get new butyl tape for the reseal.

thanks for the link, I think this is the safest way to go vs trying to reuse the old stuff.
