Painting Bumper Covers

Has anybody tried painting these with rattle cans? I know you can get factory matching paint from automotivetouchup.com, but can you get a decent finish. I've done some small parts for my car but never something as large as a bumper. Just wondering if anyone's tried it. I want to put a sport bumper on my Coupe and the estimates I've gotten from body shops for painting have been crazy expensive.
Thanks, Sam

You might be able to make it a decent 10-15ft paint job, but it'll never look good.

Out of curiosity, what were the quotes you were getting? I have some small dings on my front bumper probably from rocks on the highway that I wouldn't mind getting rid of some day. I think the best quote I got to repaint it was $200 if I took it off myself and brought it to the shop.

Anywhere from $250 to $400 off the car. I'm still looking around.

I've done it but the paint was made with the OEM paint code and I've painted parts before. You wont get same results as using a gun. Most good body shops can do paint restoration for chips where the repair is barely visible if at all. And that goes by hourly labor and the small amount of paint. The cost will be 90% labor

It won't be paint chip repair but a full respray. I want to replace my base model front with a Sport bumper. The rear has a few very small dents and a three inch crack. All this was there when I bought the car but I only paid $6k for it. I retired a year ago and wanted a decent project car to work on myself. Mechanically it's a sound car and runs very well. but the paint hadn't seen much,if any love. It had some sort of chemical stains on the hood, roof, and trunk. The rear bumper I've already described and the front bumper's paint is chipped and cracking all over it. I did a cut and polish on the paint and got rid of most of the staining. I got it to a point where I can live with it. I still need to have a paintless dent repair guy go over the car. I'm just wondering how close to a factory finish I can get with rattle cans if I wet sand, cut and buff after clear coating the color. I need to paint the front and rear bumpers and a pair of S model skirts I picked up a while back.

It's a black car. Won't be much blending, just smoothing the orange peel.

If you're just looking at it as a project and if you've got a compressor go get a cheap HVLP gun from Harbor freight and have some paint mixed at a local paint shop.

It's really not all that hard. My dad painted a lot when I was a kid and I just kind of watched. I finally had a reason to spray something myself and people are amazed it was my first time. All I did was find a good write up on how to set the gun up, did a quick test spray and went to town laying it out.

My compressor's too small for painting. It's great for tires, but that's about it. I can't run air tools with it so I doubt it would work for painting.

What size compressor is it? I used one that is every bit of 30 years old and its only a 30 lber. Its seen its share of use and is worn out, but it worked fine for painting.

It's a twin tank 4 gallon 2.5 hp, 5.2 SCFM @ 40 psi, 4.2 SCFM @ 90 psi. I ran across an Eastwood HVLP paint gun designed for small compressors like mine for $79.00. They claim it works well with 4.2 SCFM at 40 psi. I think I'll email them and ask some questions. I'll still have to get a moisture filter but they're not expensive.

I just used a cheap disposable inline one before the gun.

Yeah, I saw those. I've got a lot of parts I want to paint and I want to do it myself. I don't care if it's show car quality as long as it looks decent. I'm thinking about going to Harbor Freight and getting a 25 gallon compressor for $169.00.

If you still plan on painting at home make paint area as clean as you can. Also wet floors down good so no dust gets kicked up
