Hello,

I have a stock 09 G37xS sport sedan (I've attached a picture of what my front end currently looks like).



Now I have a weird idea, which from my research, doesn't seems to have been tried (and maybe for good reason lol). As you can see my car has a top mesh which is currently chrome with the Infiniti logo. Then below the bumper there is a black mesh of approximately similar width. What I would like to do is black out the top mesh and possibly combine the top and bottom mesh, so that it's just one big black mesh with the Infiniti logo in the center. Questions:

1. Can this be done?
2. What would be the best way to do so? And how much work would it require?
3. Are there any important does and don't I need to be aware of for this kind of transformation?

I'm just a beginner when it comes to body work so please try and be detailed in your response. And thanks in advance for your time

 

So basically like Lexus and Audi with the one giant grille look? Not sure how you can mod the top grille to continue all the way down to the lower but here's something that is easily doable to simulate the look and also reversible...

Black out the top grille with some plastidip and apply black vinyl overlay to the middle/center of the bumper. Hope this helps.

 

That was exactly my first thought as well. However, I'm just not sure how well the black vinyl in the center will match the mesh at the top and bottom. Any tricks to this?
At least it's reversible though, lol

 

If the bumper was fiberglass you could cut and form...but that's a LOT of work AND you'd have to custom make the grill as well (plus not reversible without a new bumper). Anything with overlay would require some artistic and creative means that are beyond what my mind can visualize.

 

Man...that is my car stock (even the color) and makes me realize how much I've changed it up by plasticdipping the grill, attaching a lip, and adding DRLs.

To the OP- I'm interested. Let's see you try it!

 

I think cutting and moulding the fiberglass bumper + custom mesh would be a lot of work, and very cost intensive Also, there is no way of predicting what the finished product will look unless unless I just go ahead and do it.

So I think for starters, I'm gonna stick to the vinyl solution. Are there any vinyl wraps that mimic a mesh look? Or would going with just a plain black vinyl be my best option?

Btw, I'm also looking to add DRLs or some form of LEDs inside the provisioning at the bottom. Any words of wisdom for this?

 

I don't think cost would be too bad if done yourself, but I wouldn't plan unless I had a used bumper to work on.

I don't know of anything with the pattern you're looking for. Plus, I don't know how well having the vinyl stop on a flat surface (not wrapped around) will keep. May have issues with the edge rolling up. Not trying to rain on your parade, just some realistic concerns.

If you have the bumper shown, that's the same as mine. The panels on the sides are molded to the bumper and not removable. You would have to cut or mount to them. I have been looking at making horizontal fiberglass mount for the Morimoto X.DRL Five DRLs but still struggling with how to mount them and keep it sturdy. I will be picking the brains of the engineering staff here for some ideas.
