How hot does the headlight housing get?

I am trying to figure out how hot the internal housing of the headlight will get on my G37. I don't have a infrared temp gun, has anyone tested to see how hot it gets after being on a longtime?

I have one of those temp guns. I'll try to find it and get you a reading

OK, I took some readings for you, but it's inconclusive. An infrared thermometer isn't the best tool as there's a number of layers of material to breach before you get to the light housing. Each layer will affect the results.

IN the Charlotte NC area, it was 12 deg F this morning (coldest in like 12 months). I got about 1 degree reading on the headlights as the starting temp. Not sure if this exceeds the accuracy of the thermometer, but let's just say, they started off really cold.

I ran them for 40 minutes on my commute, and my destination was 14 deg F. It was hard to get a good reading, but I was averaging 25-36 deg F. On one occasion, I had a really good angle, and was able to record about 92 deg F, but could not repeat this, and consistently got ~30 deg F readings no matter where I aimed the gun.

My goal was to aim at the inner lens that's part of the projector housing, so that's where I took my readings. As mentioned, this isn't the best tool given the front lens of the headlight assembly skewing the results.

Sorry, you'll need another method for determining the temps. I'd suggest determining what the max operating temp of the bulb is if that's a spec manufacturers provide, and then know that it will be lower than that.

Why are you inquiring how hot the inners of the headlight housing get? Are you interested in modifying your headlight in any way?

Correct. Painting the housing. Some paint will flake at temperatures of 120 degrees F. I need to know what paint to use.

Any high heat paint should be fine. The housing can't get that hot as the plastic would melt.

You don't need a high heat paint. I used Rust-Oleum as shown in the picture you see below. The one caveat is to NOT paint the "rippled" / "ridged" portion directly under the projector lens. Leave that chrome. Sunlight will reflect through the lens and cause the paint to bubble in that area. If you want the entire area painted, I'd suggest filling those "ripples" or "ridges" with some JB Weld, letting it cure, and then prep it for paint.

Do you have a picture of the results? I would like to see Carbon mist.

However, the Carbon Mist looks dark charcoal and I would like to see the contrast from the front please.

I just read through that whole thread myself looking for his pics but only saw pics of the process.

Interesting...the thread has a 7 month gap...and was refreshed in November...and I even have some posts in that thread recently.

Connor, did you go with orange, or are you still debating? Some finished product photos in that thread would be awesome!
