So i took a shot at removing my own pinstripes, used one of those eraser wheels. It worked well and pulled the vinyl right off. But, there was some adhesive etched into the clearcoat.

So, I took it to a shop...Guys were really nice, said it would come out not problem but might have a bit of a shadow, but that was fine with me.

I get the car back and it looks as if the tech burned straight through the clearcoat, and even into through the paint.

I had to get going and start my day, but he said to repaint the panel it would be 150. I am going back tomorrow to raise some heck to try to get this taken care of free. I do not feel like I should have to pay for their mistake. If they forewarned me that this was possible, i would not have had them do it.

Agreed with all you said, and any reasonable businessman would agree as well.

Just stop back in with a level head, ask the owner to check out the area, and see how he plans to make it right. Be cordial here works best.

It could take a turn for the worst, in which case elevating it may be worth it, but certainly don't do it up front.

Btw I had body work done about a year ago, noticed some issue recently, taking it back into the shop tomorrow for some fixes, no questions asked

 

You're right. Ask for the body shop manager when you get there. Do not talk with any estimator or body man, go right for the top. As long as they did not warn you it might happen which your post says the didn't, then they should repaint for free. I deal with body shops all day at work and you have to be direct. Was it a mom and pop or a national chain like a Gerber or Service King?

 

It was a mom and pop shop, R-Team Auto Body and collision In Orlando. They DID NOT warn me and I am sure of it. They said it would come right out.

Unfortunately, I paid cash, no receipt - DUMB move on my part. I spoke with the owner afterwards and he was the one who said 150 for the repaint, but he would "take care of me" when I'm ready to do it. I'm not much of a hostile dude when it comes to this, i'm not PISSED, just a little upset he didn't offer to make it right.

I am going back tomorrow after I noticed some heavy swirl marks in the paint. Called him about an hour after and let him know, he said "yeah that should have been waxed before you left - come back and we will wax it up and take the swirls out"

Honestly, the car looked like crap after they got done with it. Theres some light scratching around the pinstripe area (that'll come out easy though) - they washed the car afterwards and barely did anything to clean/dry it. I went in there with a clean car, and it's dirty now. We will see how tomorrow goes.

Yep. Lesson learned - I had pulled cash out earlier that morning to try to negotiate with another local shop.

He said i still need to pay for the respray. 200 for 2 panels.

Not happy about it, but i'm not going to get anywhere kicking and screaming about it.

Also, not going to be any more affordable anywhere else.

I may put up more of a stink when i go back. All this for a damn pinstripe. WHo puts a pinstripe on a 2010 car anyways. SMH.

 

Out of curiosity... why did you go to a shop in the first place? Doesn't pinstripe come off easily enough with a hair dryer and a plastic edge? Follow it up with some polish, then a wax.

 

Hard to imagine that the owner won't step up and make it right free of charge. If not, remind him that you can post things on the internet (FB, message boards, Yelp, etc.) that will impact his bottom line and reputation. That'll get him thinking straight!

 

If they messed up that bad removing pin stripe residue, I am not sure I would even trust them repainting anything.

Additionally, you stated you saw heavy swirls in the paint, and their response was "we will wax it up and take the swirls out". Wax has no correction properties and will do nothing for swirls. He would need to polish, and then wax to remove heavy swirling. Although I suppose he could use an AIO or cleaner wax, and depending on the pad used, get some correction.

I was under this impression as well to begin with, but after i pulled the vinyl stripe off, the residue was etched into the clear coat. It definitely needed to be wet-sanded buffed and waxed. Adhesive remover did nothing. I took it to a few shops, and this guy was the most confident that it would come fully out. Never let me know about the possibility of burning through my paint though.

The swirls came out pretty good. These guys are idiots though. I wont be going back there for paint.

Agreed. Shady business. I am in business too, and if I EVER make a mistake with a customer, it is my duty to right my wrong. I guess not everyone can be honest. Sucks.

I won't be. I'll let someone else more reputable do it when I gather the money.
