Headlight LED Wiring
Hi Fellow MyG37.com members!
I will be modding my coupe headlights soon. Upgrades include TSX-R lens swap, Osram CBI bulbs, Evil Iron Man LED setup, and blue Demon eyes. It’s going to be one hell of a project! While the bumper is off, I’m also going to be installing new fog light housings and the Morimoto HID fog kit, and the Stillen Gen 3 CAI, but thats besides the point.
I have scoured the forums, and I have a few questions remaining about the setup. First off though, BIG shoutout and thanks to GoFightNguyen and Goonz for their input. They have really inspired me to go through with this project. So basically, after opening the headlights and swapping the lenses, I will be placing the LEDs in the areas around the low/high beam shroud/projector (sorry for the terminology mess up) to get the “Evil Iron Man” effect. I’ll also be wiring blue LEDs behind the lens to get the “Demon Eye” look. After running the wires back into the headlight, this is what I plan on doing (keep in mind, this is where I need help):
Positive wires will be wound up together, and negative wires will be wound up together, so all LEDs are in parallel. Each LED is a 5050 SMD LED rated at 0.2 Watts total power consumption, 9-15 Volts, DC. I will then run the positive end of this wire to a Bosch-style 5 pin relay. The negative end will go to ground. The relay will draw power from the battery (I believe our batteries are 12-VDC), which will be controlled with a 20-Amp fuse. The relay’s switch will be controlled by the fuse box, with a 15- or 20-Amp fuse tap. The relay will also be grounded. So, when the car turns on, the fuse box tells the relay to switch on and complete the circuit between the battery and LEDs.
My few questions - does anyone suggest adding resisters to this circuit? Will the LEDs suffer problems with too much current (20 Amps)? How does one suggest adding a switch to this setup as well, so I can control turning the LEDs on and off from inside the car? Would you recommend I run a switch from the output of the fuse box, which will then run to the relay?

Put a switch in the drivers side footwell. Use an on/on toggle to swap between the accessory fuse (means car is on), and 2 nine-volt batteries (car is off, but external power from batteries activates relay).
