Yup, just polished through my clearcoat.

My Porter Cable 7424 XP came with a DVD. In that DVD it said you can't harm your paint. When he said that I told my wife they've never met me. Well, I was right. Polished right through my clear coat trying to remove some scratches from de-badging my trunk. So pissed off right now.....

Sorry to hear about the damage to your paint.

Do you have any pictures?

I'm curious as to what kind of compound/polish you were using on what type of pad (size/grit) and your technique (pressure/movement) to do that type of damage with a DA??

Orange 5.5 inch pad. Wolfgang swirl remover. I was moving the pad slow. Too slow apparently. It's all on me. Learning experience. But hey, at least my trunk will have a good clear coat on it after I spend some money....

wow, never heard of the porter cable (or any random orbital) damaging paint. And I've done some aggressive polishing with mine. sorry to hear of your experience. I've had a few of those heart sinking moments when detailing (first time wet sanding jumps to mind haha).

The DVD did not lie apparently you did not damage your paint. I had a somewhat similar situation where my buddy said he had goo gone and I was working away the leftover tape but it was actually goof off. It ate through the clear and the paint in like 10 seconds.. All is well that ends well, albeit more expensive.

Post some pictures, what did you do? Did you leave it in one spot for too long with too much pressure?

Not quite sure what you don't understand. In the OP you said you messed up your clear coat not your paint, which is all I was saying.

Did you take a picture of your trunk before/after?

Happened to me once de-badging the trunk of my bro's car. With a PC as well. But I think the issue there was the trunk wasn't cleared properly, or car had been resprayed lightly. Your car been painted before? Good luck though no biggie, just a pain in the butt.

No. Never been painted. The factory clear just sucks. Getting three coats of PPG sprayed this Wednesday. $350 lesson learned....

did you use something like goo gone to remove the badges followed by polishing?
or did you use a heat gun to heat up the badges before removal?
