Front Window Tinting

What is the legal amount of tint you can get on your front windows in Canada? Living in British Columbia.

0% tint on the front windshield.

Motor Vehicle Act Regulations

0% on driver and passenger front.

(8) No person shall drive or operate on a highway a motor vehicle which has affixed to or placed on the windshield or a window any material that reduces the light transmitted through the windshield or window unless the material is affixed to or placed on
(a) the windshield but not more than 75 mm below the top of the windshield,
(b) a side window that is behind the driver, or
(c) the rear window if the motor vehicle is equipped with outside rear view mirrors on the left and right side of the motor vehicle.

We bought our G used (from a Nissan Dealer), when I went to get the windows tinted the shop told me the windshield was tinted. I never noticed it as it's so slight but sure enough it was tinted. My guess the whole car had it and the dealer had to pull it off the rest of the car in order to pass inspection for resale but never noticed the windshield.

technically 0% tint would be so dark that no light could pass through....

Just saying

Look up the word "Pilkunnussija"; it's Finnish.

I have had all of my cars tinted on the windshield becuase I dont like sunglasses. I have been pulled over for side windows but they never know the windshield is done. I get it at 45-50% depending on the tint. It saves my cars in the summer head and helps with driving at night too with the oncoming headlights. My wife loves it now too.

I've been debating going 50% on the windshield. The car had 38% on the sides when I bought it, and I'm hoping that by tinting the windshiled with 50 it will help darken the sides up a bit. Just a little too light for my liking but don't really want to go down to 20 either because it makes it hard to see at night.

If you have 50% on the windshield either don’t drive at night, but if you do, make sure your affairs are in order, your insurance is up-to-date and that your family, those who are not in the car with you at night, are well cared for. If you’re single, leave a note or a lock of your hair on your dresser for the family to remember you by.

Tinting the front windshield sounds like a very bad idea to me also. Unless it's so slight it's barely noticeable, in which case what's the point.

My front door windows came tinted when I bought the car but I have no idea how much and I've never been pulled over for it. All I know is it's not near as dark as my back window but people still have a hard time seeing in my car.

I'm with him, going that dark is just a foolish idea.

50% will be hardly noticable. Factory windshields come tinted about 70% IIRC. I have friends with 5% to 20% on windshields and they drive at night just fine (but I agree that is dumb...). Now I wouldn't do it that dark because it's obvious and would make it difficult to drive at night. But 50% is not dark....

And the point is that it blocks 50% of light prolonging the life of your dash and keeping yoru car cooler without using one of those PITA shades

A little something to help give you guys an idea. THe % is the % of light allowed to pass through the film

Every state is different, is this quoted for the OPs Canadian residence laws?

In my state of CT afaik 30% is the legal max on any windows, including the front driver and passenger except the windshield. The windshield can be tinted though but in a manner similar to the statute you quoted where its only tinted so far down from the top. For rear side windows i think you can go even more.

When i bought my G it was already tinted including the windshield as the car came up from florida where tinting is almost a necessity. I purchased it through an audi dealer who made no indication the tint was illeagal and you can clearly tell it's tinted. Also my windshield is fully tinted, but only darkened at the top. The rest i think is either extremely low level or just some sort of polarizing effect to reduce sun glare. I usually dont need to drive with sunglasses even in direct full front sunlight.

OP are you talking about front windshield or front side windows? I'm all for dark tint but tinting front windshield I'd have to side with Chekov on this one. It's stupid, and I've heard stories about how if you're in an accident whether it's your fault or not, insurance will put the blame on you and probably would not cover anything. Not sure how true this is but definitely not worth the risk.
