Replacing Windshield

So has any vert owners has have their windshield replaced before? Was there any complications after replacing them, such as leaking, wind noise, etc? The reason I'm asking is because I woke up this morning to get something out of the car (it was parked in the garage but it snowed overnight and it was 19F) and I found a ft long crack along the driver side. The crack originated from a chip that I've never even noticed until today. Any input is appreciated. Thanks

Have you tried the Zaino Z-12 Glass polish? It might be able to smooth down those pits and chips just enough so it doesn't shine too much. I've used this product before, its a little abrasive but doesn't scratch (used it on my entire windshield before). Good for removing wiper stains too.

Would that stuff work for removing acid rain spots on glass too?

Yes done that too, it call basically remove anything that sticks to your windshield. Just make sure you don't rub it on your paint--it's a liquid with abrasive.

sounds like you dont have a choice but to replace your windshield. I have replaced M35 windshields and its like brand new again. Just go to safelight or some other reputable vendor. Safelight will come right to your work or home to do it. I am curious how much the windshield will be. the M was around 400, BUT it didnt have some gizmo the tech package came with. that windshield would have been a grand!!.

No I've never tried (or heard) of that stuff. I've tried Mother's chrome polish...but it didn't do much for filling of smoothing. It's a great water repellant though and made water bead away really well. I'll take a look on google.

Yeah it's not a famous brand like Meguiars or Mothers but it does wonders for cleaning glass. Here's my experience: I actually brought the stuff to remove some "very minor" scratches on my windows from the tint guy cutting the tint pieces on my glass with a razor blade. I was skeptical at first but I was desperate and it was only $13 so I tried it. I couldn't believe my eyes after using it because the hairline scratches were gone. I've also used it on a few pits and chips on my windshield--obviously it doesn't remove them but it did make them look better. And again, its only $13 so if it doesn't work, then use it to clean water spots and wiper stains.

Thanks for replying! After calming down a little (I was so shock and angry at the crack this morning) I remember that cracks can be repaired (if done right). Since the crack is around the lower left of the windshield (right where the inspection stickers are) and it doesn't really hinder my view, I'm deciding to get it repaired. I've seen a few videos on YouTube on professionals repairing cracks and they look pretty successful. I've contacted a guy who said he can repair cracks up to 18" (mines is around 10") and he told me that the repair won't be flawless--there will still be a very fine line that will only be visible at certain angles. I've set up the repair appointment for next week and its relatively cheap, so if I'm not happy with the results, I'll just repalce the windshield.

Thumbs up

I had to replace windshield. They are very rare and expensive in this part of Canada. Insurance paid most of it (minus deductible).
No problems since, although I notice the rubber strips around the glass don't seem to fit as snug as the original. No leaks or noises.

Thanks for sharing! Did you use OEM windshield or aftermarket?

My family owns a used car lot and replace windshields all the time. They are actually the cheapest piece of glass on the car. There are a few vendors we use and all of them come to your location to do it. Average cost is $125 - $175.

Not sure. It was Apple Auto Auto Glass. Recommended by Dealer. called around and all the shops were about the same price. I think they were all going to order the same windshield from Quebec. There are only a couple of 'verts in all of Atlantic Canada so nobody would be stocking windshields for them.

One thing I noticed (too late) was that you could get some shops to bid against each other regarding how much of your deductible you actually have to pay.

I'd be curious on what the price would be for a 'vert. There are not around so there won't be any volume of them. Around here the list price was (I think), about $1,100.00.
Wonder what your cheapie guy would charge?

So just got a call from Dealer and it would be $840 for both the OEM windshield and install. The Windshield itself was $630. I'm going to get the crack repair tomorrow and see how it turns out, if it turns out okay then I'll just leave it for a while. If the crack is still very visible after the repair then I'll have the dealer order the windshield and get it replace. I'll take some before and after pics so you guys can see how it looks.

I'd call around and get some non-OEM prices. Glass is glass as long as it's installed properly. (I bet the aftermarket guys do WAY more windshield installs then the dealer does anyway)
