How about a positive paint post......

My 09 G37 has scratch shield paint. I think they eliminated it after my year. Now, I do have a few chips on the hood, but I'm at 43K miles.

It was my understanding that the scratch shield paint only worked for the first few years as it cures, but its just that much more time that the car looks good (in theory).

Well I have to say I've abused my paint by NOT waxing it at all and just using automatic car washes. These aren't the old school type that whip the side of the car with spinning brushes but there is still some contact with overhead terrycloth fingers and lots and lots of soap.

You know what....I have virtually NO swirl marks. Every other car I've had or worked on is always covered in swirl marks. Not my G. There might be a few but it looks great!

Anybody else notice the same thing?

Mike S.

Minimal swirls for me, too. The TX heat helps smooth out imperfections that gather in the winter.

My '09 platinum graphite with self healing paint does a great job of keeping swirls to a minimum.

Rock chips on the hood and bumper are another story.

My lack of swirls is great, my paint chips are beyond pathetic, so I still think the paint is something that needs serious attention for a $40k car.

The EPA regulation causes all paints nowadays are garbage. I've heard terrible stories on BMW and Mercedes as well. My old 98 QX4 is still chip free which was likely benefited from the old paint formula.

My new G37x on the second day of ownership already suffered a minor paint damage from wielding splashes near a highway work zone, where workers were repairing structure of an overhang bridge. The splashes which I didn't think would cause any issues with the paint as I was passing at 45mph+, put a penny sized scar on top of the car where the paint was practically melted, and somehow created a buttery soft bump raised slightly above the normal paint surface. The soft bump may indicates the clear coat was still made from the scratch free compound. It didn't peel off or got worse though, I am still looking for way to safely fix it. At mileage 900, it got a big stone chip in the hood and counting, even I babied it by driving under 65mph during the break-in, and stayed a far distance from the vehicles ahead most of the time. I can't imaging what the exterior would look like in 5 years.

I have an '09 as well in blue onyx (blue slate in the US) and it looks great - no swirl marks and only a couple of minor chips!

I positively hate Infiniti's paint.

There. That's positive.

Just washed my car today. I know I only have 3,500 miles, but not chips and paint looks like it did two months ago when I brought it home.

Many cars usually have scratches all over the door handle well. Every scratch shield car I have seen have none whatsoever regardless the year.

I agree with 0max0 all new cars have pretty crappy paint. German cars are becoming notorious for having paint as strong as wet paper.

The paint on my 08 g37 sucks!!! It has acid rain damage to the clearcoat that you can't hardly see in the sun. But as soon as it gets cloudy or under lighting they look like thousands of tiny chips in the clear. You can't feel them but you can see them. And I only have 30K miles on my car..

It's horrible that $40k cars have paint that belongs on Kia Rios. I'm seriously considering a vinyl wrap in the next year or so. Yours came out nice and I'd like to have a finish that I won't have to be so paranoid about. Just looking at this car the wrong way causes chips it seems

Maybe it's luck...or maybe it's just a matter of time, but after 15,000 miles I have not found one peck in the front end paint on our 2010. The car is driven about equally highway/city. Even when someone squarely backed into the front bumper last week at a gas station, some very fine abrasions rubbed right out.

I recall our 2003 G having several rock chips after the first couple of years, so maybe it's the luck of the draw, driving habits, location, etc., and not as much about the paint?
